View Full Version : Crosshairs and aiming

I need some help, I use a triangle crosshair at the moment because I don't like something blocking my view of the target but my aim isn't so lekker. Which crosshair is the best to use and what is a good mouse sen for the razer diamondback(I used 1.5 for my mx500)?
Windows acceleration or ingame? I use windows set to "fastest" (ingame is crap), and disable all the ingame stuff. The way I set my sensitivity is to stand in a hallway like the shock on asbestos, and what I do is just give it a little flck so it does a perfect 180. If it overshoots or undershoots adjust your sensetivity untill its 100%. The end result will be really fast movement for close range battles and if you move the mouse slowly you will get a really smooth movement, perfect for sniping. Hell weird at first but practice you will get used to it fast.
I like the dot but its a bit small so I use the cross dot and make it half way smaller.
What also helped me with my aim is under your .ini cant remember which one, change your Y and X axiss I think the default setting there is 2 I use 0.5 helps a lot with improving your movement, but play around untill your comfortable.
Well thats all meager advice I have, use it well my son.
Best way to get an unrestricted view would be to turn the crosshair off :P. Flak is quite handy in that case.
Anyway, I'm guessing the most accurate kind of crosshair would be a plain dot. I'm not sure if UT has a dot though.

So, what do you guys use?
/me looks @ noman aka "The Accurate"....
Im using a small thick red cross for my LG and shock rifle and the rest....well...probaly doesnt matter....

Triad 2 or 3 set to size .80 and with a color for each weapon works well for me( weapons hidden obviously)
I use :
red=rl
Yellow=- flak
Lightblue= LG
Green=link
Blue=Bio
mix of white and yellow= mini
White= shock
oh and i use the "bracket" for shield and translocator and link.
oh and FOV set to 105-108

Ut does have a dot but its not usable(for me anyway) I use a dot with color set to yellow
its not the standard 1 and its in 1 of 2 croshairs packs.
http://pestelensie.myftp.org:8001/ut2004files/utils/
both are there and are fairly small I am not sure in which 1 . For me its the best croshair availble.

Ahoy!!!!
Ok since I have decided that I want to play UT again, I think it is but only fair that I could give my 2c's about this.
Your crosshair should be easily distinguished for the rest of your surrounding/gameplay. Ideally and most commanly the Krauz Enlarged Dot (0.33) or Cross 1 (1.75) on a 800x600 res is used. Your colour of crosshair is really down to personal preference. I personally use a yellow crosshair with red skins, Gauge forced skin.
Settings for the Razer DB:
I have had a lot of experience with all Razer products and would think to have a firm knowledge of the right settings. What you should do is get the latest drivers, click on advanced (for sensitivity) set master acceleration off, set master control off and only allow windows to control your sensitivity (set around half way). If you would like to know why? Each time you adjust your sensitivity your are applying a filter to your mouse to either increase or decrease your sensitivity, what this does is introduce systems that ellimiate certain signals that the mouse sends that are meant to be interpreted. More importantly for Razer users you would notice that if you have master sensitivity on with master acceleration your sensitivity in UT is VERY VERY low. Around 0.3 - 0.6. Which IMHO really gives the Razer a muddy feeling. Going with my recommended settings will allow you to set a sens around 1.2 and the mouse will feel very responsive, WHICH is should be originally. These settings also compensate for the problem that 1600dpi engines have and that is "negative Geforce" which causes mouse error (will not go into details). In UT mouse smoothing and reduce mouse lag must be OFF! In your user.ini Mousesamplerate = 0.002 which you get from the Razer being a 500Hz mouse. Period = 1/frequency hence Period = 1/500 = 0.002.
MX518 users:
First off in your select buttons you want to disable buttons 7 and 8 - these are the buttons to vary your sensitivity - WHICH I really do not recommend being used. Pointer Acceleration must be set to off. Smart move set to off. Use OS implementation as Setpoint is still very new and through testing causes mouse lag. UT reduce mouse lag off, mouse smoothing OFF. In user.ini Mousesamplerate = 0.002. Your sensitivity should sit around 1.1 in UT.
Hope that helps

I like the old classic green "+" (Cross 2) for all weapons :). I really miss this crosshair when I play other FPS games...

I had the exact same problem when I first started gaming. What I recommend you do is if you have a Razer DB, allow your thumb to touch down on your mouse pad, this will a) Give you more control over your mouse b) Get rid of you twitching when going for a precision shot. If you have a MX518 do the exact same thing but use your pinky finger.

What does "Reduce Mouse Lag" and "mouse smoothing" do ? I have "reduce mouse lag" ticked and "mouse smoothing" on 0.30 and I am just fine... ?!
Also, please elaborate on the "negative Geforce" effect.

I've got another question, when playing must you keep your eye on the target or on the crosshair? My aim is a lot better if I keep my eye on the crosshair but I get a headache after 20 mins :(.

well since I saw the utvid "creating the latest blow" I have started using the same Xhair they do.. the little one with the 2 lines and a space in the middle.
I really like it, because I can get my xhair exactly onto my target and still see it/them.
Oh, what a question Gunjitsu. I think this will be quite difficult to answer.
Basically, there are two ( in my opinion anyway ) ways to aim in this game. Firstly by sight and secondly by "knowing" (I have not other way to put it). Furthermore, you aim differently in different situations with different guns (I am not going into detail about this).
By sight:
This is quite simple, when the crosshair is on the enemy, you click. Specifically, this applies to minigun and Link gun secondary fire mode as well as Shock and Lightning.
By "knowing":
This way of aiming involves knowing your sensitivity. You know how far you have to move the mouse and click in order to hit the enemy. You do not actually look at the crosshair to get the shot in. This is apparent when using Lightning or Shock and you see people flicking their mouse quickly and getting a hit.
Yet, the question remains, why there is a crosshair at all if you could aim by "knowing" how far you have to move the mouse. It is probably a hybrid of those two and at times, the one way of aiming "overlaps" (right word?) the other.
I know this does not really answer your question Gunjitsu because I simply do not know the answer :P . At the end of the day, you just have to find your "own style" and practice.
I also hit the fire button for hitscan more by straving (spelling) left and right untill the target and cross lines up then by actually moving the mouse around.

12 Jun 2005, 17:10
ye, i do the same. I get in the general area by moving the mouse, then srafe left or rigt to get the precision aiming in.
I also turned my sensitivity down alot, from one side of my A3 Pro Pad to the other is only a 360° turn. Makes close combat a bit tricky, but at least it lets me hit some sniper shots :)
Also found the best dot for myself is the one off that cross hair pack, with the coloured centre and black outside. Yellow works well for me.

What does "Reduce Mouse Lag" and "mouse smoothing" do ? I have "reduce mouse lag" ticked and "mouse smoothing" on 0.30 and I am just fine... ?!
Also, please elaborate on the "negative Geforce" effect.
Reduce Mouse Lag: This feature increases the response time between windows and unreals engine in communication translation of information sent from your mouse to windows then to unreal. Essentially this feature is only needed for older mice where they operate the 100-200Hz frequency range. Alternative reasons for trying this feature is if you notice that your in game movement does not respond instantly to your hand/mouse movement.
Mouse Smoothing: This is a filter that gets added to your mouse movement, one could think of it as if a player had a high sensitivity though had very shakey movement, mouse smoothing would help reduce the unnessecary jerking. I do not recommend this feature for any layer that has a sensitivity where they can only do a 180 turn on their mousepad. For high sensitivity players this is a feature that many overseas players use and is quite visible ingame when on.
Negative Geforce: Let me first begin with taking a classic example that most people are able to relate to. If you think back to you ball mice day and with a flick of the wrist you would snap your mouse and achieve the effect of spinning the ball within the cage of the mouse, causing the mouse cursor to move even though you are not really moving the mouse. This is obviously due to the fact that the inertial force is greater than that of the frictional forces applied by the mouse cage and mousepad. Now that I have gotten that technical shit out the way. How does this relate to an optical mouse? Well the answer is pretty simple, this is a phenomenon that occurs with optics. What happens is that when you accelerate your mouse at a high speed you achieve a hgh frequency response, usually 700-1000Mhz bursts. When you track slowly your achieve 50-100Hz frequency. Now where negative geforce comes to play is when you go from slow to fast then back to slow. The optical sensor needs to degrade very rapidly in order compensate for the speeds. On screen what happens is the mouse will be dropping/increasing to the correct freqency and essentially you will land up undershooting or overshooting. This is quite comman amongst players that have low -> ultra low sens's. I have heard that Razer has a solution to this problem and will be rolling it out on their next patch release. Logitech IMHO is waiting for razer to solve the problem and land up jumping on the band wagon (since the MX518 is using the Razer DB engine).
Hope this sheds some light on your questions. Lemme know if I lost you and need to explain further.

The acutal definition of negative geforce is that if you move your mouse to the right, the forces acting against the mouse push to the left and that is your geforce. The negative is when the force acts in the same direction of movement.

Concentrating on your crosshair is a lot better Gun... if you are getting a headache is because your brightness and contrast is too bright. I would suggest reducing both and compensating by increasing your gamma slightly. Another suggestion to try is that maybe your crosshair is too dim, meaning your eyes need to focus more on your x-hair which could also result in headaches.

I use the MCrs crosshair pack, and with utcomp1.6 i fuse the double conc and dot into one, the conc being lightblue and the dot being pink wiht a black circle around it, works very good, gives me easy idea for lg aim, and is big enough for rl use

I tried Nauts advice with the bigger and brighter crosshair and it works like a bomb, thx for that one. I also changed the default utcomp skins from red to pink and blue to bright green, it makes spotting them a lot easier.
I am not entirely sure if I understood it correctly Naut.
Here is another question. Last year I played in the WCG qualifier for CS in Cape Town. After installing the drivers I had the following scenario:
Move the mouse fast and it moves not nearly as far as it usually would. Similarly with slow movements just the other way around. The slower the mouse was moved the more "Accelerated" the cursor movement appeared to be. Extremely annoying. So in essence, I had "negative nouse acceleration" when I moved the mouse faster, and "positive mouse acceleration" when I moved it slower.
Why is that ? Or is that exactly what you are talking about when you are referring to
"Negative Geforce" ?

Negative Geforce is that indeed, I am trying to explain it from a technical point of view, so yes that is negative gefore that you experienced, to actually put it in simple terms. Negative Geforce has to deal with when you are moving a you crosshair. It is the time taken for your mouse to pick up the change in movement and respond.

Guys,
While we on this topic, I would also say that FOV has an impact.
I have my FOV set to 120 with a mx510 - sens 0.50.
[My aiming is getting better since i changed my sens from 4.00 to 0.50 ....lol]
I use the following for guns:
LG & SR - dot - size 80 and set colours not to match players or background
rest - triad 2/3 [ not to sure ]
but, i find i still get out aimed by most guys with LG & SR any suggestions ??
Thanks 1 million

what size minitor u play on?
I have a 21" and used to play on 110 FOV. I found my aim was pretty good and had a big advantage with spam weapons cos I could see more of the screen.
However, I turned my FOV down to 100 now (takes some gettin used too as you feel like you are running in syrup for the first few days, its soooooooooo slow) but my aim has improved in leaps and bounds. I think it is just what you prefer, as some uber aimers use 90, while others use 120.
I think aiming just comes down to your skill TBH. Ppl that aim allright can improve it slightly by using a better mouse, tweaking your settings and gettint the right x-hair etc. But there will always be some wally that has natural skill and will out aim you on a R30 ball mouse :(

Yo,
Here is a pic of the add on x-hairs. I use the one names "dot" 4 right 3 down from the top left hand side.
The outside stays blakc and I changed the inside to yellow for LG and green for ASMD (shows up nicely on the blue).
I use the dot with the circle around it (std x hair)f or most the other guns, and vary the scale (the larger scale for flak and lower it slightly for the mini and rocket).
Hey Haja,
Thanks man, I play on a 17" and a 19" sometimes. I use the same dot for me LG and SR.
I'll just keep at it.

I think you press tilde and then type in 'preferences' and edit it there or maybe it's in your user.ini file? Beats me :P.
easier than that- just open console
TYPE : FOV 105 ( or whatever ure choice )
and click enter.
LO there
i have been trying this "dont move Xhair instead move yourself thing and it works but now anoter thing
if im higher then the person im shooting all goes well but when he is higher then me i just seem to mis all the time
i understand that this may be cos he is a small target but i keep the Xhair on chest level mostly
even both of us stand still i just cant hit him
any ideas ?
