Post I made on another site....

mmm.....when the XBox version was released, I seriously thought about getting the console for just the game....on looks and previews alone. Now that the PC version was released, I got hold of it...and can honestly say that had I bought a 360 just for GoW, I would not have been disappointed...the game rocks me like an earthquake registering 10000000 on the richter scale.
I am so psyched about this game, it feels like you are in a movie, part of the movie. The whole game, the feel of it, you can almost touch and taste it.
Walking between those awesomely impressive and oppressive buildings, being in them and dodging for cover....popping up to send out fire....ducking incoming fire as you reload.....kicking open doors....this is just heaven in the world of me....

Epic is my 2nd best game dev of all time!

PS. I played some ETQW directly after GoW and was trying to time my reload the whole game....

In the words of Marcus, SCHWEEEEEET!!!! http://www.pcbuyersguide.co.za//images/smilies/w00t.gif

FPS games feels broken after GOW. Strafing behind a wall just doesn't feel right any more. :)

I'm also having major fun with it. I've had to play the first two acts multiple times (for various reasons) and it's a testament to the game's design and quality that I enjoyed it each and every time.

If anyone wants to play some co-op, drop me a PM! :D

btw....I started the game for the first time and it warned me about my CPU driver being out of date....could possibly lose date....ignored it....played the game and lost a days saved games as it couldnt "find" my profile.

Installed the CPU drivers and no problems so far....

I just have 1 question. Is the story line the same as it was on the xbox 360?

I am considering buying the game, but I finished it already. So I think I will wait till I get it cracked....

The Co-op is awesome!!!

I lost my saves too. It seems the game is extremely picky about changes to your system state. I'm not touching anything again until I complete the game!

The PC version has a few additional chapters in Act 5 to rectify some continuity problems. You also get to fight a Brumak, which is not possible in the 360 version.

Yeah same story, they just added more onto chapter 5, so you actually fight the brumak and run away from him a few times while trying to fix a broken draw bridge that doesnt have power.

Gears rocks!

Sounds great, and playing GOW on a p.c is like comparing a 5 dollar slut (xbox360) to a 100 dollar slut (P.C rulez!!)

It was fun on xbox 360 but without a mouse and keyboard FPS aren't the same.

I've been wondering about this, but since it's not like conventional FPS's, how does it actually feel playing with a k/b and mouse? The traditional PC combo works well enough with "generic" FPS's alright, but how does it handle the cover system for Gears?

It controls great, in my opinion. Standard controls apply, so keyboard for moving/going into cover and mouse for looking around/shooting. You have two options with the action (cover/roll/run) system: either enable double-tapping of movement keys or bind a specific key as your action key.

I use spacebar as my action key and it feels pretty natural. Walk up to a wall, tap it and Fenix will slide forward until he's in cover. Tap it while moving in a direction and Fenix does a roll. Hold it down while moving forward and you get a roadie run. Breaking cover is as easy as moving away from whatever you've taken cover behind.

EDIT: Alternatively you can use your Xboxen controller (with required adapter) to get controls identical to the console version.

Yeah, what Lord_Xan said, I'm playing GoW without any adjustment whatsoever! Just like you would control any other third person shooter, only better imho.

Just updated via auto-update last night, but thanks for the direct link, Gamos! So far I can't really tell if they fixed anything, but there is speculation on the official forums that the horrible savegame bug has been fixed.

Found this:

Preferences, Custom Maps Bug Fix

If you start the game using the Play button on the Autorun screen, you may experience the following issues:

* Personal preferences (for example, resolution settings) are lost
* Custom maps do not appear on the map list

To fix this problem:

1. Go to Start, click Run, type “regedit,” and then press Enter to launch the Registry Editor
2. Go to the following registry entry: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft Games\Gears of War\]
3. Change the “SetupPath” value so that the word “binaries” is capitalized. For example: “C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Gears of War\binaries\” becomes “C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Gears of War\Binaries\”

Can you patch that? Epic released a patch a while ago that addressed stuttering and random crashes. Lots of people are still having issues though, so you may be out of luck.

I experiences this extremely frustrating bug myself. From what I can gather Live appears to be the culprit. If you're using an online account, make sure you're logged in while playing. I also log out of Live myself instead of leaving it to the game - not sure if that helps.

Oh, and don't quit to desktop directly from the game! Exit to the main menu first and then quit.

(The savegames are available on your Windows partition somewhere. If you want to be really sure about keeping your progress, pause the game before quitting, alt-tab and make backup copies of the files. You can also hax what chapter you start on when doing the "New campaign" thing if you just want to finish the game. PM me if you need details.)

Yep, it's really small. There have also been two 20MB updates to the Live redistributables, but I don't know if they apply to cracked versions.

I don't have internet at home thus I can't sign into Live and I have a legal copy of GoW.

I havent patched the game for fear of the patch reseting savegame becuase the stupid patch doesnt have a readme!!!!

Downloaded a GoW unlocker this morning, gonna give it a bash this evening but if it isnt any trouble Lord_Xan, please pm me the details.

I found this page (http://gearsforums.epicgames.com/showthread.php?t=585332), might just help some of you who is struggling with GoW crashing.

Live support was disabled (profile will be saved in your My Games folder) and only LAN games will work.
There won't be any checks for ping and game will be fully playable over Hamachi or any other VPN.

If you want to play over Hamachi, make sure that Hamachi virtual adapter is in higher priority than
your all other network connections.

Yes, all players will have Player1 as a name, it is not changeable unless you "hex" OnlineSubsystemPC.u.

P.S.
after u overwrite existing files, all your previous saves will be lost

P.P.S.
You can disable startup movies by removing StartupMovie from WarEngine.ini

If I ever get this thing to work, How many hours of gameplay should I expect ?
Hopefully more than trying to get it to work lol. ;)

Lord_Xan

I would guess around 7 to 10 hours, depending on how good you are and how fast you play. I'm sure I got around 12 hours out of it, but I like admiring the scenery. :)

Ok I know I'm a bit late with this game but a few questions.
1. The sound seems to mainly come out the right speaker.
2. How does one jump over something, when doing this it always goes into the 'cover' mode and on the odd occasion, jumps - damn strange movement.
What happened to good ol 'jump'
3. It caters for 'C' for 'crouch' but does not work.
I'm using the v1.2 patch with no-dvd patch.

1. The sound seems to mainly come out the right speaker.

You sure you got everything set up right in Windows and Gears? Maybe the speaker setting in Gears (can't remember if there is one) is different than your Windows one?

2. How does one jump over something, when doing this it always goes into the 'cover' mode and on the odd occasion, jumps - damn strange movement.

There is no jumping in the game, just vaulting over stuff. To vault over something, enter cover and then press forward+cover. Provided the object is small/low enough, you will go over. They cover this in the tutorial level. :)

3. It caters for 'C' for 'crouch' but does not work.

You can only toggle crouch when you are behind tall cover, like a wall. If you are in cover behind something low or out in the open the key will no nothing.

ProAsm

Thanks Lord_Xan, yeah pity about the jump and crouch as if it had that it would be a superb game.
But we press on and will no doubt get used to the odd movements :)
The sound is a bit strange as I have a 5:1 sound card with a 5:1 sound system and it works great in other games except here but I juggle the balance and it makes a good compromise :)
