Make onslaught round times 10mins on public servers

10!

Damn, I voted 10 but the more I think about it, the more 15 sounds like the best solution. Is 10 minutes really enough time to score a non-overtime victory if the teams are fairly well-balanced?
15 minutes with more hectic core drain in overtime should do the trick. Maybe we should test it?
(I'm not 100% sure, but I think public server timelimits are 10 minutes at the moment!)

/me changes vote to 15 minutes with more hectic core drain in overtime
the best thing to do would be for us to experiment with different settings

20 is default right? ( me thinks ).... Did someone / tp change that on sgs / onslaught servers?

I think so, yea. Now that I think about it, it may be a remnant of the H vs MA clannie, actually.

Noob question. How many rounds in a map?
is it 3, or the first team to score 7 points? If first to 7, for example, what is the point allocation (then we can work backwards so we can get a maximun 20-25 minute game going)
~MA~[peterpan]
16 May 2005, 12:37
Well, the winning score is actually 3 points.
Where you get 2 points for win (not overtime) and 1 point for win in overtime.
So, if the round time is 10mins, the game can theoretically run for as long as:
5x10mins = 50mins!!
/me points at 1st ladder
So if we shorten it too much, maybe there will be too many overtime scores and not enough 2 pointers which can also just drag out the game. So yeah, maybe 15mins is better...
btw, is it possible to change ur vote??

Hmm, well, working from that, worst case scenario is 3 wins in overtime, which = 45 minutes @ 15 min per game. plus the overtime, say at 3 min core drain, take a game to 55 minutes. Hence the reason lots of ppl are weary of ONS, thats like 5 TDM's or 3 x ctf's.
If you want to get more ppl into it, just a suggestion, maybe make the rounds 10 minutes (+- 39 minute game max) with some nice drain on the core in OT.
Most games would actually take about 20-25 minutes then :)

worst case scenario is actually 5 rounds....
It happended in the first onslaught ladder...
Team A wins 2 rounds in overtime
Team B wins 2 rounds in overtime
Team A/B wins 1 round in overtime / fulltime
So, total of 5 games.... ( O_O ) <= *no, that is not what you think)
But that really seldom happens....

I'm a staunch supporter of the ZA ONS community and therefore you won't find me very eager to bend over backwards too much. If we keep making concessions to lure hardcore DM/CTF players we'll end up with a gametype not even us regular fogies would want to play.
Hope I'm not coming across as an ass, but I want to protect the gametype I love as well. :)
seems to me that there are only a few ppl who can get a good score in the first couple of minutes so the 15-20 min sounds good

Nope Xan, undersatand 100%. You dont want a TDM with nodes at the end of the day,now do you :P
Ok, maybe i will give it a go with th proper rules, whats the worst that can happen? :)

Just a question, how exactly do we sign up?!?!?! How do we know which team we slot into???!?!? Who do I have to pay to get into Xans team?
Naut
Well it kinda takes care of itself, play 10 rounds and make sure XAN is there or PM him a screeny if his not there and sit back and wait for the results.
Also known as the lucky packet effect but much more complicated.

10 min is to short cause the time runs out to fast and u get overtimes
20 min is to long cause it has a tendency to get boring when u play into overtime
15min is just right, short enough to be interesting and long enough to score properly
what if we make the winning score only 2 for normal play and 3 for the ladder
or would that screw ur ranking system up?
Thats an interesting one: 2 = winning. Min = 1, Max = 3 matches...
Or is it possible to edit the rules so even in overtime you still get 2 points? Then you could leave it at 3 and it would be Min=2, Max=3 matches for any map?

It wouldn't screw the ranking system up, but it would mess with the balance of the game. Unfortunately not all maps are completely symmetrical, so with 1 round games one team will always be at a disadvantage. The disadvantaged team should at least get a chance to play the map from the other side, which means the scorelimit can't be 2.

That might be possible. I'll play around a bit with the settings tonight (from 21:00 onwards on the MOD Server - anyone is welcome to join) to see if I can find a workable solution.

don't get me wrong i was trying to think of a possible sollution to the dragging matches
so the ctf adicts can play ons to
if we play one round and loose so be it better luck next time then,
this way we play more ons at a faster pace instead of to or tree long games
u can still have 3 as the winning score in the ladder.

Whaaaaat? I only do that on Primeval, and then only if you shoot at me. Leave me and my tank alone to shoot at the core and I won't bother shooting you. :P

Played around a bit with the settings last night - 13 minute timelimit with 50 core drain in overtime seems to be a nice compromise. The 50 core drain takes a 100 health core down to 0 health in about a minute and a half.
15 minutes is a tad long, I think. The games we played last night showed that even with fairly balanced teams you can grab 2 points in 10 minutes, so 13 minutes should be even better.
Unfortunately it looks like you can't change the scoring in overtime.

ITS CATAPHRACT!!!!!!!!!!!!!
WTF? I'm innocent I swear! It was like that when I arrived! There was an earthquake! A flood! It was dark! I was young! I needed the money! I didn't know the tankshells were live! She said she was 21! I want another lawyer! :(
I will adjust the onslaught server to allow for 15 minutes playtime. ;)
Nautilian, in short, just play 10 matches with more than 4v4 or more people and you will be qualified as a ladder participant by Xan. Xan will then stick you in a team, with a bunch of scientifically selected players. (Selection is not clan-based at all). And send you into battle against the other teams constituted along the same lines.
Taking into account your performance last night - forget about paying to get into Xan's team, I'll pay to be in yours!
Just keep playing and read my ONSLAUGHT GUIDE. It's recommended by the United States Armed Forces.*
*This is a pathetic lie.
