GENOCIDE
I'm sorry but i just can't hold it in anymore. I just HAVE to tell you guys because i'm very very excited!
Project Epiphany (http://forums.prophecy.co.za/f68/project-epiphany-24781/) is almost finished. I'm taking the PSU to be tested on saturday and if it tests out ok, Epiphany will be finished VERY soon, in which case i'll be starting my next mod(s)
The next mod will be called Genocide and will consist of two mods.
The case will be an AOpen EY65 case:
http://www.tomshardware.fr/images/cartemere/20040825/aopen_ey65-total.jpg
http://img.clubic.com/photo/00081509.jpg
Here's a few plans that i have already:
Most of the hardware will be watercooled. The CPU, GPU, and Chipset will all be watercooled.. I have already obtained all the relevant blocks and the pump, i'm just waiting to get a radiator, which i should be getting within the next few days.
The entire front Fascia will be removed and i'll make a new one. The new one will be about simplicity, somthing like what you'd expect from an ANTEC case, like the front of the SOLO.
There will be a VFD/LCD display in the front as well
The case will also obviously be getting a new paint job, colour is still undecided but i think i'm gonna go for a nice black colour, or perhaps a dark grey. I'll seeNow here's the part where this mod will differ slightly from other mods. For a number of reasons, this case will have NO optical drive inside the case. Mainly because this case is TINY and i have to fit a pump in here, but also because i hardly ever use an optical drive. So i have a plan that will allow me to use an optical drive with this machine anyway, and this plan is what the second mod is about:
Second Part of Genocide
I need an external optical drive, but there's no way in HELL i'm gonna pay over 1K for one, so i'll MAKE one, but one with FAR more functionality than a regular external optical drive. This one will include a few added features.
I'm going to build an external enclosure that will house a DVD writer, two hard disks for extra storage (a 160GB and a 120GB), a memory card reader, a 120mm fan to cool the HDDs, and a USB hub. The Optical drive, card reader, USB hub, and HDDs will all eventually run from the enclosure through a SINGLE USB cable to the PC.
Now i need to explain in more detail how i plan on doing all of this. The optical drive and the two hard disks will be connected to a USB hub inside (lets call this HUB1) the enclosure via IDE to USB adapters. The Card reader and external USB hub (we'll call it HUB 2) will ALSO be connected to this internal USB hub. This internal hub will be what connects to the PC. So if you plug in this USB hub, you'll connect the Optical drive, both HDDs, the card reader, and the external USB hub to the PC.
So, now you're probably wondering how i plan on powering all of this huh? Well, i managed to get my hands on a pretty small 350W PSU. This PSU will probably come out of it's housing and i'll put the bare, to preserve space. This PSU will power everything in the enclosure - the DVD RW, both HDDs, the 120mm fan, and the USB hubs (yes, i'm gonna buy USB hubs that need 5V so that they can power hungry devices like my portable 20GB laptop HDD). This PSU will get power from a regular power cable.
Here's a diagram to help explain:
http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/more/genocide1.jpg
This enclosure will also have 2 LCD displays in front to display the temps of the two HDDs.
I'm thinking that i might add individual switches to all the devices within the enclosure so that i can power up only the ones i want to use.
Now the case mod and this external enclosure mod will run hand in hand, but the external enclosure wont necessarily always be in use, and i can plug it into another PC if need be.
So that's what i've been planning for about 2 months now. I've been so frikken excited and i just need to share my excitement
I'm gonna contact a few local etailers and see if i can hook up some sponsors for this mod.
Let me know what you guys think

I dont understand what you're saying?
Daeja, won't you run into bandwidth problems using all those external devices with the bandwidth supplied by 1x USB 2 port? 480Mbps translates into 60MB/s transfer rates. What speeds does HDDs push nowadays?
Perhaps I just misunderstand how a USB hub works.

No you're absolutely right. But that's no problem because i'll never be using more than one of the devices inside at the same time ;)

Well tbh, it just doesn't sound that exciting to me - but of course it's hard to tell at this point, as you've obviously got an image in your head which I don't have!
Now Epiphany, that is (will be :P) just awesome!
PS. Check this out ...I've always loved it, and I'm sure you've come across it.

Wow that Epiphany project is very well done! Ive tried some modding myself a few years back, but now i realise how much money ive waisted that could have been spend beter(for me anyway). So unless you have endless cash, id advise anyone modding to whip up a budget plan 1st, cause once you start you need to get it done and that may come a couple k later :|
*edit* ouch how is ure leg doing?

Sponsor(s):
Early stages:
Okay, i have secured and confirmed my sponsor. Before i elaborate, let me tell you how this happened. The night i started this thread i sent emails to about 10 local online stores and told them about my upcoming project and asked for sponsorships for components, I expected no replies. Those emails were sent out at about 1am. At about 8:15am i got my first reply. That reply was from an online store called IceVision. Visit them Here (http://www.icevision.co.za/index.php).
Mario from IceVision Agreed to hook me up with a 250GB SATA2 Hard disk, an LG DVD-RW, a 120mm fan, and some RAM. He agreed to send me 512MB of Twinmos DDR400, and then a set of Corsair TwinX XMS low latency 512MB sticks of DDR400 at a later stage when he gets stock. That was really great of him, i was ecstatic.
Main Sponsor: Prophecy
Please visit the Prophecy Shop HERE (http://www.prophecy.co.za/)
Please visit the Prophecy Forum HERE (http://forums.prophecy.co.za/)
A little while later, i got an email from Henk (Firestar) from Prophecy. From the start, Henk was very amped to be a sponsor for this mod. In his very first email, he agreed to give me everything i asked him for (which was a CRAPLOAD of stuff). At this point i decided to break the sponsor with the guys over at IceVision and let Prophecy be my one and only sponsor.
After a few emails, we agreed on the following goodies:
1: A SATA2 Hard disk. I'm not 100% sure, but by the looks of things, it'll be a 250GB. See it at the Prophecy shop over HERE (http://www.prophecy.co.za/hitachi-deskstar-t7k250-0a31636-250gb-sata2-3gbs-7200rpm-p-1740.html)
2: Three Vantec Nexstar 3 External Hard Disk Enclosures. See the enclosures at the Prophecy shop over HERE (http://www.prophecy.co.za/vantec-nexstar3-nst360u2bk-onyx-black-aluminum-with-mirror-p-1296.html)
3: RAM. I'm not 100% sure. See, Henk said he'd send me Team Xtreem DDR500, but the only Team Xtreem DDR500 i see on the Prophecy shop is "Team Xtreem Overclocking DDR 500MHz - 2GB (2x1GB Dual Channel)". I really hope this is what he's talking about. See it at the Prophecy shop over HERE (http://www.prophecy.co.za/team-xtreem-overclocking-500mhz-2x1gb-dual-channel-p-1798.html)
4: A Liteon DVD-RW (The LITEON® 16X DVD+R, 4X DVD+/-R DL to be specific). See it at the Prophecy shop over HERE (http://www.prophecy.co.za/liteon-dvdr-dvdr-white-with-black-bezel-p-661.html)
5: Two D-link DUB-H7 7port USB 2.0 hubs. See them at the Prophecy shop over HERE (http://www.prophecy.co.za/dlink-dubh7-7port-plastic-996x59x257mm-p-2267.html)
6: An Antec Tricool 120mm Fan. See it at the Prophecy shop over HERE (http://www.prophecy.co.za/antec-120mm-tricool-trilight-3speed-p-19652.html)
As you can see, this is a pretty large amount of goodies, and i can't express how happy i am regarding this sponsor. Henk, Thanks again man! :D
Okay, so let me explain what i need all of this stuff for:
1: The HDD. This HDD will go into the actual PC case. The HDD i have in there now is an IDE disk which will look HORRIBLE and potentially ruin this mod. I have other hard disks that will go in the external enclosure.
2: The three Vantec Enclosures. The enclosures will be pulled apart for the guts. I need the PCB that's inside them that converts IDE to USB. The three PCBs from the three enclosures will be used for the two HDDs and the Liteon DVD-RW that's going into the enclosure.
3: RAM. Well this will obviously go into the machine. At the moment all i have for this machine is 512MB of DDR400, which is a bit meager, as this machine will end up running Windows Vista.
4: The DVD-RW. The DVD Writer will be going into the external enclosure.
5: Two D-Link hubs. This is a cool part :D Both hubs will be going into the external enclosure, however, one will be internal, and the other will be external, but not completely external. Let me explain. The one hub will be available from the outside of the enclosure, just 7 ports for any devices or whatever. The second hub will be inside, and the two HDDs, the DVD-RW, the external hub, and the card reader (oh crap i still need to source one of those) will all be connected to it. The internal hub will then have it's cable running out of the enclosure to whichever PC i connect it to.
6: The Antec Tricool fan: Man i love Tricool fans. I have 4 of them in epiphany, great fans these. This one will be in the enclosure to cool the two HDDs.
So that's what all these goodies are for. I really can't wait to get started with this project. All that's holding me back is that i'm waiting for the arrival of the stuff that Prophecy is giving me and i just need to finish Epiphany. Epiphany should be done within the next week or so, at which time i can commence this mod. By the way, Prophecy played a significant role in Epiphany too ;)
Again, let me thank everyone over at Prophecy (http://www.prophecy.co.za/) for this sponsor. You have no idea how much i appreciate it!
Just let me point out that, as far as i know, nobody has ever been sponsored for Case modding in SA. Overseas, guys are getting sponsored left right and center, but not here. It seems that Prophecy has really got an interest in the SA enthusiast PC market and they're really trying to get modding in SA to a better standard. I'm most certainly not saying that they'll sponsor every second Joe, hell, maybe i'm the only person they'll ever sponsor, maybe i'm the first of MANY, but i'm sure that many more companies will follow in Prophecy's tracks and start making an effort to make modding a big thing in this country.
Guys, i'm telling you, one of these days, modding in SA is going to explode and we're gonna see some FANTASTIC stuff coming from the local guys.
Thanks again to Prophecy, you guys are awesome!
Make us proud boet! Gratz on the sponsor.

gratz with the sponsorship and big up to Prophecy.
just a side note, and no offence intended, but I think it was a silly decision to cut IceVision out of the sponsorship. i am sure it left a tainted taste in their mouth, and it would be great to give them a few things to sponsor, so they could see your mod come into fruition. This would in turn let them realise that modding is indeed a good thing to sponsor, and open up more doors to others.
just my opinion........
I'm going to go buy stuff at the Prophecy shop right now!

Yay! I've always liked Prophecy!
Regarding other sponsorship; Gamos, sponsors often clamour to get a slice of the action when it comes to sports stars, and not all of them are chosen. Obviously, the sponsors with the biggest offers are chosen first, and the fact that DJV had to turn down a sponsor is not out of line with typical sponsorship deals. Obviously, tact needs to be employed so as not to discourage them, but I think the fact they they were keen on helping is a good sign.
And DJV, this new mod looks pretty cool. I can't wait to see exactly what this external drive thing is going to be like.
Oh, and did I mention that I really think Prophecy rawks!
Jaymac, you must have meant Haja and not Gamos. I got it though. :)
[N]Haja
30 Jan 2007, 07:55
G got it :P
Jaymac, I understand your sentiments, but I just think it is a bit silly accepting then turning down a sponsor, especially when it is the first time it is being done. It could have been good for modding i ngeneral in SA having 2 places sponsoring a mod, so they can both reap rewards, and in turn increase their sponsorship.
but back to the thread, I am sure DAE will do some awesome work, and I wish him all the best :)

Another Sponsor
IceVision (http://www.icevision.co.za/index.php)
Some interesting news for you guys. As soon as i accepted Prophecy's sponsor, i emailed the guys over at Icevision, who also offered to sponsor me. I was afraid that they would be a bit hacked off at me about choosing Prophecy over them, but on the contrary, they congratulated me and were very amped about my sponsor with Prophecy. They told me that they had already ordered the HDD and and the fan, and that they are gonna send it to me anyway. lol. That's really great of them! :D
So, everyone, please do me (and yourself) a favour and pay IceVision a visit (http://www.icevision.co.za/index.php). These guys are also a great store and have a nice selection. Big Ups to IceVision, they're also very keen on getting modding in SA to a standard that is actually RELEVANT in the world. Thanks IceVision!
Anyway, yesterday morning i got home and saw this in my room:

Hey hey hey!!! Some new toys! I opened up the box:

Okay, so what did i pull out? First off:
An Antec Tricool fan:
http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_1864.jpg
Aaag, i hate these frikken 3 colour fans, but i LOVE Tricool fans, so i'll just get rid of the LEDs.
Next, my D-Link 7 port USB hub:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_1878.jpg
Prophecy was meant to send me two of these babies, but they didn't have stock and will send me the other one as soon as they get stock.
My new Liteon DVD Writer:
http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_1867.jpg
http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_1877.jpg
Some fantastic new Team Xtreem RAM. Two gigs of high performance goodness:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_1875.jpg
http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_1876.jpg
I have yet to test this RAM. When i get a chance i'll put it in and run some benchies for you guys. Unfortunately i wont get anything mad as this IS only a P4. Before i finish building Epiphany i'll put this RAM in there and bench it :D
A Seagate 160GB SATA2 Hard disk:
http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_1871.jpg
http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_1872.jpg
Compared to a regular HDD, it's WAY thinner, which i thought was fantastic considering this will go into a SFF case:
http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_1874.jpg
Last, but not least, some Vantec Nexstar 3 external hard disk enclosures:
http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_1862.jpg
No no, not only one, but THREE:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_1881.jpg
Here they are next to the one i had before this mod as well as my 2.5" one for my notebook HDD:
http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_1884.jpg
IceVison are sending me a 250GB Seagate SATA2 hard disk, so i'll be pairing up the 160GB and the 250GB inside the SFF case, and in the external enclosure, i'll put a 160GB and a 120GB (the 120GB was given to me as well :P )
With regard to what monitor this machine will eventually get when it's done, it will be getting the 17" LCD screen i originally modded for Epiphany. Remember that mod? If not, read it here:
17" LCD Screen Mod (http://www.systemshock.co.za/forums/index.php?showtopic=6703&st=40)
But then what screen is Epiphany gonna be using? Hehehehe... Epiphany will be using a BenQ 22" LCD, which i'll be getting today. The 22" BenQ will be modded to fit in with Epiphany, and the 17" LCD will be RE modded to fit in with Genocide.
So, there you go. Let me know what you guys think of my plans, and thoughts so far. :D
God Bless
Ettienne

Okay, after seeing the amazing work one of my buddies did in Sketch-Up, i decided to give it a go and learn how to use Sketch-Up. It's pretty easy, i must say. Anyway, here's some of the planning for the inside of the external enclosure. Please excuse the low quality of the models, i had to create each and every single one of those models myself (except the fan) just to make sure that my dimensions, etc etc etc are all good :)
I have yet to plan the actual look of the enclosure, all i've done is plan the inside, which is also not complete. This is just a rough draft. Click the links under the images for some 1680x1050, uncropped High res goodness.

Okay, i've basically finished the design for the external enclosure. I have still not got a card reader in there because i have yet to source one and measure it so that i can create it in Sketch Up. Otherwise, the model is pretty much complete. I moved a few things around so as to make the enclosure itself slightly smaller. I also placed the USB ports on front now as opposed to sitting somewhere closer to the back (which was a STUPID idea from the beginning).
Anyway, here are the images, high res images under these ones. I suggest you have a look at the high res ones, much nicer ;)

That's the basic idea for the final design.
I'm also in the process of ordering a reservoir (or two) amongst other things. I'm stuck guys. I can't decide. It's between the following:
I can either have Two of these (http://www.performance-pcs.com/catalog/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=318&products_id=4529) on top of the case,
Or perhaps one or two of these (http://www.performance-pcs.com/catalog/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=318&products_id=4487) some where inside or outside,
Or, of course, there's also the Swiftech Res (http://www.performance-pcs.com/catalog/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=318&products_id=3615) which is also great.
I have yet to decide. I'll see how i feel later and then i'll place my order.
Let me know what you think :D

I reckon keep 'em inside. Even though the external ones look kinda cool, this mod is all about simplicity & minimalism is it not?

Not necessarily, no. ;)

Guys, nice nice update :D
I've gone and changed the entire platform of the mod. It's like a 180' turn going on here. Originally, i was planning on using the XCCube i have at the moment, which contains the following setup:
P4 2.8Ghz, HT
2x 1GB Team XTream DDR500
Radeon X800XT PE
220W AOpen PSU
AOpen Case
That has ALL changed. I managed to get my hands on one of these monsters:
http://img.clubic.com/photo/00148092.jpg
http://www.hardwareportal.ru/Computers/Shuttle.sn26p/Shuttlesn26p-1sm.jpg
That, my friends, is a Shuttle XPC SN26P. This is a MONSTER of a SFF PC. It's slightly bigger than the XCCube, but it's a million times better.
Interested in the new platform? Well, the board is amazing.
-> It's a socket 939 based board, supporting regular A64, Athlon X2, and Athlon FX.
-> It's got an nVidia nForce 4 SLI chipset (yes, i said SLI).
-> It's got two DIMM slots, dual channel of course.
-> 7.1 channel on board audio
-> Gigabit LAN
-> FOUR SATA ports
-> And last, but certainly not least, it's got a frikken 350W PSU!! 350W! These Shuttle PSUs are so efficient. This PSU powered my FX60, both my 7800GTs, a DVD RW, and a HDD, and it was asking for more. I almost put a frikken 8800GTX in here. I have one lying here at my house, it's one of my friend's card, i wanted to run it so bad :P
Here's a link to the product page (http://hq1.shuttle.com/products_page03-spec.jsp?PLLI=31&PI=90)
I also ordered the card reader that i'll be tearing apart for the mod:
http://www.nanoelf.co.za/images/ugtcr912_image01.jpg
http://img.ncix.com/gif/13815.JPG
That's a Vantec card reader.
I ALSO ordered the reservoir. For the res i'll be using an Alphacool Cape Cool 10:
http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/more/15700_01.jpg
Now all i need is a socket 939 CPU, and a video card (or two :D ). I'm gonna keep trying to source that stuff. I can't wait to start this mod, it's gonna be a nice one :D
Let me know what you guys think :D
im still selling my 3500+ for R400 :)

Um, DJV, what app are you using to draw the schematics of your design. It looks cool and I kind of need something similar for a mod I want to start in June.

:(
Please... please READ my posts. My posts are not only made up of images.
Okay, after seeing the amazing work one of my buddies did in Sketch-Up, i decided to give it a go and learn how to use Sketch-Up.
i can create it in Sketch Up.
I used Sketch Up.

LOL Haj.
Sorry DJV, next time I'll make sure to read before I ask a stupid question. I typically do read all your words, but let's be honest, all those purty pics can sometimes be bit distracting :P

No problem ;)
Okay guys, small update here. I have a few things to update about. First of all, i managed to get my hands on a 3500+, a Venice :D I also played a bit with it, and got it to run GAME STABLE at 2.75Ghz (250x11) at 1.5V:
http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/more/350008.jpg
I couldn't go any further because the motherboard doesn't allow more than 250FSB :( So i'll flash the BIOS, maybe i can get more that way. (Happy about my Mushkin doing 275Mhz though 8) )
So now the specs of the PC are finalized:
Shuttle SN26P
AMD Athlon 64 3500+ Venice
2x 1GB Team Extreme DDR500
2x Legend 7600GT SLI
1x Seagate 160GB SATA2
1x Seagate 250GB SATA2
Not too shabby :D
I'm still waiting for my reservoir that i posted about a few posts back. It should be arriving from the US very very soon.
I received the Vantec card reader that i posted above about. Nice little reader this. Should be perfect for the project.
Last, but not least, i'd like to thank one of my sponsors again, IceVision (http://www.icevision.co.za/index.php). They've offered to send me two Legend 7600GTs. The one arrived today. They didn't have stock, so i'll get the second one next week.

Lol, look at this one:
http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/more/IMG_2125.jpg
Very funny. That sticker will have to come off since i'll be watercooling these cards.
So, big big thanks to Mario from IceVision, he's made another big contribution to this mod. :D
Ooh man i can't WAIT to start this mod. I've go SO many cool ideas. To give you an idea, the case will be black and i'll be using ORANGE plexi. I'll be fabricating an entire new face for the mod, and i'll be making a motherboard cover as well. I also plan on doing some pretty intense work with plexi in this mod. Even more intense than in Epiphany. I plan on doing plexi FORMING, like molding and so on.
In case you were wondering about the watercooling, i'll be using Koolance goodies. I have already obtained all of the stuff i need for the watercooling, except for the reservoir, which, as i said above, is on it's way to me from the US. I'll be watercooling the CPU, Chipset, and both Video cards.
Modding FTW guys, seriously.
Sorry to hijack,
Just wanna know what temp u get at 2.75Ghz under a full prime95 load?
I got my 3500+ venice to 2.64ghz @ 1.38V, runs super PI 1M and 32M, windows, any game perfectly stable and under 50 degrees C. However my Prime95 was running at 57 degrees at load, so I'd didn't want to go any further and backed off to 2.53ghz, max temp is 54C under prime load. Using a Zalman 7000B with AS5....plus i hafta deal with the heat in Durban :/
Apparently my MaxTcase is 55C, so i didnt want to take any chances.

I get about 53 degrees C under full load if the chip is at 2.75Ghz. But that's with a CRAPPY air cooling solution. I'll see what i get when the chip is under water.

Update time. Small update though.
I'm STILL sourcing goodies for this mod. I ordered a handful of stuff from Synapsys, but all that was really relevant to this mod was two LCD
temperature sensors. They dont LOOK very red in the pics, but in real life they're very very red. Perfect :P

My stuff from the US also arrived a few days ago. I ordered one Cape Cool 10 reservoir and some power connectors. I only ordered one Cape Cool 10
because i first wanted to see if it'll be ok for this mod. Here it is:
http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_2211.jpg
http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_2213.jpg

Compared to one of the Coolwave reservoirs that are being used in Epiphany:
http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_2215.jpg
It's PERFECT. So i'll order another one :D
And the power connectors:
http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_2218.jpg
The regular molexes:
http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_2219.jpg
The ATX connectors:
http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_2221.jpg
And these are the cool ones. Molexes that have caps, end caps:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_2223.jpg
http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_2224.jpg
Very cool!
I also got a Vandal Resistant Switch from electronics123 to see if i like it:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_2227.jpg
http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_2228.jpg
I think i like it.
It needs some polish, but otherwise it's cool.
Now i'm gonna go work on Epiphany. w00t!
