US, January 25, 2007 - Punching home a message that Midway is coming to the next-generation with a full stable of goods, the Chicago-based publisher today announced that the game formerly known as Unreal Tournament 2007 is now Unreal Tournament 3. And it's coming to the PC, PlayStation 3 and Microsoft's Xbox 360 in the second half of 2007.

Using the Unreal Engine 3 (what other engine would it really use?), Epic's seminal first-person shooter will douse gamers with gorgeous, life-like graphics, arm them with unbelievable futuristic and brutal weaponry, and hurl them into online deathmatches like never before.

The new game comprises a vast number of changes from increased aggressiveness and intelligence in the AI to better, more ridiculously powerful weapons to new characters, game modes, and online improvements. I think it's renamed across all platforms.

I for one don't mind the change, in fact, I love that they're returning to the "there is some kind of war, and everyone is killing each other" than the "There once was a war and now we are playing games simulating those wars" that UT2003 brought us.

I think it also comfirms that Epic wants to move more towards what UT99 originaly was. I just love that trailer, man, this is going to be such a long wait!

Scally it is Unreal Tournament III for all platforms. It is just coming to X360 too, whereas previously it was just announced for PC and PS3. So it will be a multiplatform game, no UT2007.

You can see they are aiming big, it was never meant for xbox before, but if epic makes lots of moneys thats ok, more for development.

No bob, i also noticed that, and they are not bringing out an Unreal 3, where before it preceded the tournament version if i remember correctly. SO a combining of that could be the case, with a more focused Single player to go with multi.

Scally I really think you are totally mis-reading that announcement.

This isn't a combination of Unreal into the franchise, or some epic single player game, it is UT2007, just with a new name. Single player will no doubt follow a similar ladder structure like UT2004 single player, just with smarter bots, more game modes and some wonky story penned down to try and glue it all together. Liandri corp... blah blah blah.

Also, I am willin to be that they had UT2007 assests running on X360 hardware long before they had it running on PS3 hardware. With UE3 and GoW, it was all but a given that the X360 would eventually get it too. Personally I think they didn't announce it along with the PS3 announcement, as not to detract from any Unreal Championship 2 sales.

maby, bt I get the impression that they are trying to go as big as possible with this. Covering as much ground with one release as possible....multi platform, mutli game modes(single and multi).

Just a quick update from someone who visited the press event:

What's there is really good and, frankly, I'm pleased that they're taking their time with this title. Mark Rein stated this evening that "this is not another series continuation, but is a whole - basically - next generation UT game. So this is the third generation Unreal Tournament in the third generation Unreal Engine technology". Rather than rush the title out the door, just to fit an artificial release window, they're taking all the time they think they need to get it right.

Back to the demo of the game real quick - the only gametype available was vCTF and none of the Main Menu was in place - so no poking around there. We spent several hours playing through VCTF-Corruption, the Asian-themed map that has been seen in past official screenshots. The game was setup to pit the Necris team versus the Axon team and it was interesting to get a feel for the new vehicle set. Let me put it simply, the Necris vehicles are tremendously fun to play. If you're looking forward to the game for its new vehicles, I don't think you'll be disappointed.

You've seen the movies; you've heard the blurbs - basically it's all true: there are tons of nods back to the original Unreal Tournament. Dodging is very much like UT, the characters are large like UT, Death and feigning death are reminiscent to UT, and the weapons are loud and dangerous like UT. The answer to the question of the century: yes, the Shock Rifle primary and secondary fires at a rate much more similar to that of UT. And, of course, the game looks very good.

Grrrrr, i find all these teasers to be absolute torture, Hopefully we get a demo soon so i can see how much i need to budget on upgrades.

Well, the trailer is utter crap in my opinion. And the gameplay looked like some bot was playing. Not very revealing. (Guess that's the point?!). Let's just hope it doesn't suck.


EDIT: Well, I just watched the Trailer again. From a quality point of view, this trailer is totally awesome. However, from my view as a gamer who wants to finally see where the FUCK they are going with this game, it's pretty damn useless.

I watched the trailer like four times before I was able to pick out an characters. Seriously, I thought the guy was just running around shooting at shadows the first couple of times I saw it!
