So I'm getting ADSL (at least when Telkom decide to pitch up) and I thought I'd be smart and not get a standard Telkom router/modem/whatever. Just a question or two.

a)What's the difference between a router and a modem?
b)I figured I'd just get one from D-Link, but they have quite a few. We have 2 PCs I want to hook up and I was wondering which would be the best solution?

Options are (more or less) :

D-Link Di-704UP broadband router with 4 port switch + 1 port USB (http://www.pcgameworld.co.za/product_info.php?cPath=27_108&products_id=1169) @ R599.00
D-Link Di-704P broadband router with 4 port switch (http://www.pcgameworld.co.za/product_info.php?cPath=27_108&products_id=1168) @ R569.00
D-LINK DSL-300T ADSL MODEM (http://www.pcgameworld.co.za/product_info.php?cPath=27_108&products_id=1142) @ R449.00
D-LINK DSL-504T ADSL MODEM ROUTER 4 PORT (http://www.pcgameworld.co.za/product_info.php?cPath=27_108&products_id=1143) @ R799.00
D-Link Di-604 broadband router with 4 port switch , for ADSL (http://www.pcgameworld.co.za/product_info.php?cPath=27_108&products_id=1166) @ R479.00
D-LINK 4 PORT ETHERNET BROADBAND ROUTER DI-604/E (http://www.pcgameworld.co.za/product_info.php?cPath=27_108&products_id=1131) @ R369.00
D-LINK ADSL ROUTER DI-304 (http://www.pcgameworld.co.za/product_info.php?cPath=27_108&products_id=1129) @ R1,059.00

I chose these because they look about right, so any suggestions would be most welcome.

Thanks

why so set on a DLink?

The difference between a "broadband router" and a "modem" is often that a router doesn't necessarily have have a POTS ADSL modem on it. But some of them do... GG HF

Karnaugh - Not really set on D-Link per se, I hear Netgear's quite good as well. Thanks for the 411, though.

sneaky - Thanks for the links, checking them out.

Just want to get online so I can stop duelling Xan, renamed to Vampirus JR :P

I had the NetGear first but that got zapped by lightning. Have the dlink 504t but that seems to have issues with the exchange (seems alot of ppl are having sync issues these days after the 4mbit upgrade a few months ago). Now using old Telkom router since that gives me much higher SNR ratio than the Dlink.
I would take the Netgear over the Dlink any day, but the only thing that works for me now is the Telkom Marconi V1 router.

Honestly wouldn't spend any money on a DSL router.

I have an SMC Barricade, cheap as chips, works perfectly, and I won't miss it if there's a lightning strike.

If you want wireless, buy an AP separate. If you want a "firewall" you're just fooling your self, and if you fall for any other feature differences you deserve to be taken for a ride.

Um... I don't think I even know what half of that stuff you're talking about is, but if it's cheaper, I'd love to know more about it. :) Like, what is an SMC (I'm assuming brand name) Barricade (I assume model?)

Personally, I have a netgear and it's never really let me down.

Came close, I tend to lose concentration after about 7-8 minutes. Although if you keep hitscan away from him it becomes alot easier ;)

These microfilter things, can I pick them up from a Telkom store? And is a surge protector generic ie can it work with any modem?
