Does anyone here have a regular problem where their ADSL modem shows the line is down and have to restart it to bring it backup.

I get this happening daily either between 2pm-4pm or 7:30pm - 11pm

any ideas?

Well, there seems to have been a general problem plaguing the internet for us South Africans over the last few days. Has this been goign on for long, or only recently.

I get that sometimes as well though, and if I am correct, we both use the same router; Netgear wireless, right?

Never had that problem myself and I'm also using a Netgear wireless...

But yeah, internet has indeed been fooked :(

well, Ive swapped three types of modems, and I handle over 6 ADSL connections, and its only happening at one place. Telkom denies a problem... they say its the modem - but how can three different modem makes have the same problem.

so was wondering who else has had this and if they fixed it!

I cant validate this:

Apparently, Data from Japan to the US is being routed through SA atm. Some earthquake or something broke a cable.

At times I have had my ADSL disconnecting like that up to 9 times a night.

Ye ive noticed major packet loss during games spikes etc and international websites that simply wont load. I guess the 'tubes' are overloaded.

found this whilst looking thru the forum tonight, maybe this can help? From a post a while back by PurpleHaze.

"look if this of any help let me know, it might seem weird, but it REALLY was my problem. if u are using a power supply with lightning protection or the phone lines go into the power supply then into the phone lines, swap your power supply for a std one and go directly into the lines. I know everyone is thinking duh... no protection but hey... honestly... it somehow interferes with the line... i was dropping out 7/8 times a night... since the swap, nothing for 2 months..."

If I could also point you to a thread made waaay back, in june 2006 :) http://www.unreal.co.za/forums/showpost.php?p=45637&postcount=8

Ah ha!

I was wondering what was going on there! You see, Telkom apparently has enough bandwidth to route Japan / US traffic (which must be horrendous) but still claims that there's not enough to keep bandwidth prices down. Those bastids!

Maybe it's the quality of the lightning protector? I got this awesome one that guarantees anything that if anything goes wrong with the devices attached to it, they'll pay up to R5000. I'm sure there's terms I haven't read properly, but how cool :D

The last few months my internet has been a disaster. Sync issues galore, with the SNR margin dropping to 0 alot. Basically the router would be losing sync every minute and staying like that for a few days. Then it could work a few days with a couple of disconnects a day max. Telkom techs were here 5-6 times, changed the line from the house to the pole (the line goes straight from the pole to the splitter now).
Nothing worked and they tried everything. Their Telkom USB modem would have the same stats as my D-link. and that didnt make a difference either.
Then the other day i got an old Telkom router (Marconi v1), and my SNR ratio suddenly doubled to 18-19, while the other stats were the same as with my D-Link. I haven't been disconnected since i started the Telkom Router up, and thats 3-4 days ago now. So maybe they are having issues with the DSLAM software compatibility with some routers after the 4mbit upgrade, since thats when my crap started.
I have my line protected through the UPS, but that didn't make any difference.

I have several disconnects in the last week.

Called telkom - no help at all.

Got a different isp (axxess) - still the same - called them up - they said telkom were upgrading some goodies - not sure what that means - but my adsl link has been unreliable.

For some weird reason I cannot get into some sites (www.avsa.co.za) as well.

Im going to bypass the lightning protector on the phone line tonight.

Who knows ?

My previous router did not have this - and I had no problem whatsoever.

18 Jan 2007, 09:38
lol... hopefully all the problems really are due to telkom upgrading "some goodies"... and when the shit storm passes things might be better than they're now! :D

Anyhow... I only had problems last Sunday... since Monday everything has been fine... :D

One beeeeg problem I do have though is that I forgot my damn router Password... :( LOL! And if I need to change summin... I can't... so I'm gonna hafta reset everything and I don't feel like redoing all my tweaks and settings on my router! :(

Anyhow... hope you guys get sorted soon! ;)

Post them for us all to hear :)

I still think we're ignoring Zyron's very vaild point that US / Japan traffic is being passed through us. There was a 5..0 Richter earthquake that side of the world a few days ago, and I mean; it makes the most sense ITO being able to access local sites but battling to surf intl ones.

I have had no problems apart from the standerd millisecond lag on the UT servers and my ping to WOW EU servers are still a constant 600ms no disconections.

GM<Jaymac>MF
18 Jan 2007, 14:50
Well, that just confirms what Zyron said. You shuldn't experience probs with EU connections because the traffic is going from US / Japan. It also explains why some intl sites work but not all.

well, I am just tired of it - when its your own connection its tollerable - but when its a clients - they just can't believe you when you say the word "telkom"...

its almost as if you telling someone you saw a ghost!

I think I'll give it a skip... dealing with Telskommel for 4 months trying to get them to install my DSL line was bad enough... I just might go crazy at work and start shoosting people and stuff! :P

Damn Toppie... that truly sux man... when I still stayed in Pretoria, I was rather safe than sorry, and always unplugged my PC till the thunder storm passed... hope you got insurance on ur stuff man! :(

Yeah telkom for me -

telephone line as well as power protector.

I may try plug it in again and check the reliability - if it drops - then I found my problem.

Mine got fried last week Monday... :(

Down the phone line, nuke the router, down the network cable, blow up all the components.

Wow Bean, that sucks.

I have jack conected to my ADSL router. Not even a filter, I just talk over the static... but now all this talk is making me nervous.

Ah, what the hell, I'll take the chance. :P

I tend to unplug vital things when a storm is close, phone line out of router, router power unplugged as well as pc power.

I always unplug my adsl and power when I'm finished using my computer (and I have a small ups). I also unplug it when a storm starts approaching. This one was one of those pre-storm stikes though. Still partly sunny, lightning out of the blue.

Scared the crap out of the dogs and cats :)

you may as well give it a try. My electric gate once got struck by lightning and the insurance paid out no problems. Obviously we just had to pay the excess.

(Actually, now that I think about it; maybe one of you punks came and shot it with a lg.)
