View Full Version : Online v LAN

So I decided I wanted to give online playing a shot on Sunday, since I want to get ADSL. I shot over to German_Weasel's place and we get going. All well and good, but I just had a few things I needed clarification on :

1) When I run over a weapon, I normally switch as soon as I get it (assuming it's a weapon I want to use at the given time). But when I was online, I would have to wait for a second or 2 before I could change and this naturally felt...well... unnatural :P

2) When approaching the shield, I have a big smile on my face because I've outtimed all the other players, right? Nope. Turns out, lag is laughing at me because the shield's long gone and I'm the only one who still sees it there

3) This I find most irritating. When trying a shock combo, I'd nail it, but would only find out a second or so later, likewise with the Link Gun, the green trail on the secondary fire doesn't appear for a while either :(

4) Finally, when I enter a server, I fly around for a bit, but I can't see anyone. After about 30 seconds or so, the character models start appearing (minus brightskins, mind you:P) then names start appearing and eventually everything is fine. BUT IT TAKES SO LONG!?!?!?!!!

My ping was constantly between 40-50, if that helps.

So. Is all this normal and part of adapting to online play?

No that is some serious packet loss or some other such latency issue.

I`ve played like that before and it is the pits, no fun for me whatsoever :P

ye, that is NOT normal, as plato says.

Check for packetloss. Shields not dissapearing is the first sign of PL. a 2 second dealy is a 2000 latency, so doubt its normal :)

Eisch =_SNAKE_=... that ain't normal man... LAN and Online are VERY similar, except for a bit of added latency online... i.e. the player model's hit box travels a bit slower than on lan, hence causing you to sometimes hit the guy with lg or flak right behind him, rather than directly on him...

One MAAAAAAAAAJOR thing that pisses me off with online is Packet Loss, like when you jump around a corner, hit a guys solid in the face with a flak ball, and nothing happens, not even a hitsound... happens with RL and LG now and then aswell...

Other than that... online ROX! :D

I think what might explain what happened to you at German_Weasels house, is the fact that you two shared a connection and that might've caused the packet loss, when I used to go LAN at a mates house, we were able to play Quake 3 at the same time, but UT totally fooked out, ping jumps to about 800 or so, dunno if it might be something similar. And then on the other hand, we've had like 4 guys online on one connection at Pox's house, and all were able to play/spec at the same time. :P

AAAAAAAARRRRGGGHHH!?!?!?!?!!!!!!!

That happened alot! So, any way I can remedy packet loss? Did anyone else experience this on Sunday?

hey Snake,

I've experienced this before, and you know what I found was that locally on my own machine I had a problem. First time I experience it - it was a virus, can't remember which one, and the second time funny enough was msn which had caused some problem in memory. Perhaps try shutdown all your programs, and check for viruses. cause both times when I sorted the issues the problem went away.

Nice... DJ...

But now that SNAKE mentioned it was on sunday... my Internet was totally fooked on Sunday aswell... pages load, then time out, then load, then time out... so maybe our wonderfull fools... erm I mean friends at Telkom worked their magic on us over paying customers again! :P

If it is your PC snake, check for virus's as Dj said, and also be sure to check for Spybots. They are a killer for packet loss, doing some dodgy net transaction every so often. Try 'Spybot Search and Destroy' (free) and perhaps "Ad-Aware'. I would recomend using more than 1 spybot program though, as in my experience, they find different things.

whenever it rains alot in my area... I get the same problem with my DSL.

I would suggest the following:

1) Backup all your files / folders... and format your PC. I have found if you always install programs, new games, copy alot of files... your entire system slowly degrades over time. gets slower... a format will clear out all those unneccessary loading programs you have forgotten about and clear up any viruses, trojans, spyware, etc.

2) Remember, you need at least 512MB of RAM for UT. I noticed a big difference in load times when I upgraded my RAM from 512MB to 1.5GB. Perhaps you can turn some of those gfx settings down.

3) You can play around with the netspeed values in the console. Whenever there are around 7 vs 7 TDM's or CTF's... UT starts lagging heavily. I change my default netspeed from 7000 to 5000 and it makes a HUGE difference.

4) Are you using a router? perhaps check it out. my old marconi router was faulty and caused plenty problems with online gaming.

anywhoo... hope this helps a tad

Good points Syz..

Although there was serious server lag on Sunday night, and I was getting unusual packet loss at one point, although it did clear up a little later.

Servers have been very unstable of late.

Drop console and type:

netspeed 5000

Simple as 1, 2 pee

For further UT tweaking info, feel free to browse UZA's Help and Tips forum, all this information is there ;)

Servers have been very unstable of late.

That is the single most diplomatically put phrase I have ever witnessed. Ever.

Thanks for all the feedback and tips so far, will definately see what I can fix up on my side. For the rest, it's up to Telkom...:(

Just on a side note, a 384Kb line should be more than sufficient for UT, right?

Syzygy78
16 Jan 2007, 13:50
more than sufficient! I actually had better latency to the UT server when I had a DSL192 line ;p

GM<Jaymac>MF
16 Jan 2007, 14:06
That's probably because Telkom's fantastic infrastructure couldn't support an upgrade of everyone to 384K.

I am sure you tried this already, but check that you didn't have automatic updates on... because that would lead to some serious problems. Especially if you haven't been on a DSL connection and upgrading consistently.

Well was just online a minute ago on the server, and I was getting spiked PL from 2-20 all the time..

Could be spyware, will run some scans to check now, but I think it's something about the server itself... let's see.

Internet is just fooked today. Intl. is completely fooked.

It's so damn annoying when you make your living online.

Yeah, Snake didn't try to surf the web, when i did, GOOGLE timed out the whole time, this was from Saturday evening till monday and this was at the times snake waznt plugged in. I'm sure that it's Telscums doing, cos everything is back to normal again. LOL, Snake sure chose a bad day to play online!

Yeah! Because my internet (especially international) did not work at all well yesterday and was VERY fishy over the weekend. Sounds like the Telkom magician has been at it again.

Damn I despise telkscum.
