Civic is a bit more expensive, but not by that much. Could be the best one here... if only I could stand to look at it! BLING!!!

Focus is definitly one for the short list.

I don't know much about cars, but I like the Golf V quite a bit. Driven it once or twice and it feels great.

Renualt don't bolt their cars, they lick the components and slam them together.

I'd go with a Focus Si or a Golf.

Edit;

Or a Seat Ibiza, I drove the Ibiza Cupra 1.8 Turbo the other day, quite nice (if a little cramped inside, almost dislocated my shoulder trying to get the seat belt)

Up to R160 000 Max. Second hand is fine if milage is 40 000 or below.
If I can get away with a lot less I'd be stoked.
Sometimes think I should just settle for a damn getz...

Renualt are actually damn fine cars. I have the older Megane Hatch, it really is built well and goes decently (16V 1.6L).

However, they are a bastard to maintain, as all the parts have to be bought thru the agents, as there are very few 'pirate' (aftermarket) parts available for it. If you go for a motor plan, then thats a moot point.

Someone at our work just bought the Seat Ibiza, the 2.0L model. It is R130k new, and has all the bells and whistles, 15" mags, aircons, 4 x disk brakes, airbags, power sterring, the works. The only downside is it has no motor plan, but the services are round R750 every 15 000km,
They also are basically made by VW (engine looks identical to the polo) and the basic shape even resembles the older polo (before the double lights), but has been smothed off nicely and looks as good if not better than most ofther 'hot hatches' out there atm.

So perhaps look into that?

I have to a with you on that Polo GTI, Scrye. Seems a bit much for a Polo.

Haj. Are you sure about that price??? It seems a bit, um... cheap for a 2L. If its correct it looks like a bargain!

I think I prefer comfort over speed. My 150i honda gave me enough fines as it was! Gonna test a Golf 5 and Astra over the weekend. I'd rather have a more comfortable 1.6 car than a smaller 2L. My average speed to work is 35 km/h anyway. Astra you'll get 1.8 sport easy on my budget, but the Golf will probably be 1.6.

You know Scally... Ive driven a getz 1.6 HS before and I have to say, its a very smooth drive indeed and very nippy too. Love to keep my balls though...

Thanks for your input guys. Ive always pheared buyers remorse!

well, thats what the guy claimed opiate. I suggest phoning a Seat agent (here Audi are the agents for them in durban, maybe try them or VW, or maybe even SEAT :P)

Let us know your findings, as I may be looking for a car one day too.

opiate, here is what u do. GO and do alot of shopping around. GO to dealerships, autotrader etcetc. COme back to me with a short list of what u end up WANTING, dependant on price, desire etc.
I will try and advise you from there. Trust me, u cannot beat shopping around. Its a simple must, and if you do, buyers remorse will not be a problem.
