iPod sucks.
Get something that'll let you do what you want with your music.
Oh, this is an 'imo post' so if you don't like it, just remember that it's my opinion, you don't have to agree with it.

DFFS, I must say (sorry to go off topic here_ but I have to agree with Jaymac. I recently got a free ipod from a friend, and I have been wanting one for the last year.
The joy of having 40 gig's of music on hand is really great, however, their menu and 'sorting' structure sucks.
You are not really able to sort your mucis into folders and then sub folders (like a HDD) but are forced into genre's, artists, albums (I mean WTF remembers the name off 500+ albums of the artists u listen to?). I have gotten around this problem slightly by deleting the song titles and putting the artist name in, but now I don;t know the song name I am listenng too, and still have to click around like a madman to get to an album.

Yeh, they were the cheapest I found in SA. Saw that before I posted since a friend of mine bought his from the UK at the price we pay here for a 30GB.

check maybe for the Creative range, and I know Sony just brought out a new one, looks awesome, no idea how well it works though

Creative makes some really great stuff. They let you handle your music in a great way and, compared to iPod, it's a breeze sync'ing with your library. Especially if you want to get stuff off of it.
Creative also comes with MUCH cheaper accessories than iPod and their sound quality is definitely up there with the best. Unfortunately I don't know what models they have available, but look around, and if they have an 80Gb, I'll be it
s cheaper than an iPod.
Agree with Haj also on the Sony stuff. I haven't used any of it personally but I typically find Sony products to be easy to use and of a generally high quality.
Other good brands are iAudio (not related to Apple) and Mobiblu. I am fairly certain that both of them will have an 80Gb option. I would look them up for you and post some links but (strange as this is) my Google is not working. :(
Anyways, it's up to you and while it's true that iPods are well made, don't break and are generally of a very high build quality, they DO NOT allow you to do things the way you like. You HAVE to do it their way.
WTF!
iPod > ALL
Mine is 3 years + old and never had one issue with it. Granted you have to use brain at times but there is nothing wrong with the device or with what it was intended too do. The only thing that sucks is that you cant use the store with an SA credit card. But dont think a lot of people are really bothered with that.

So, Sneaky, say you're on holiday and you've got your laptop with you and that it doesn't have all of your songs on it. Now, say you want to take some music off your iPod and onto your laptop so you can burn a CD to play in your car.
What exactly do you do?
You don't, that's what... and that is one reason why I dislike iPod so much.
I'll agree with you that they are well made and do what they are suppsosed to, but they definitely don't do anything special and personally, I think they are expensive and their accessories are RIDICULOUSLY overpriced!

Oh, and for the iPod videos. You have to buy a special connection (which is damn expensive) just to output to a TV, and last I checked, you couldn't record straight from TV onto the iPod.
A friend of mine bought a Mobiblu which came with all the cables to plug straight into any RCA input (so, TV, video machine, whatever.) He can also record from said TV directly onto the Mobiblu, no hassles. Imagine, just plug your device into the TV (wherever you are) and bam! you've added to your movie selection. Essentially, it's a complete video machine / media center in your hands. There a stacks of devices which do this and even more!
iPod's can't do that. And iTunes sucks as well.
Itunes does suck - I have a 30gb ipod video and I hate using Itunes....

I have an iTrip so all I listen too in my car is my iPod.
--EDIT--
Also there is this site called google which will sort out all the issues you have above.
Nway my next car will be iPod ready straight from the production line, screw a CD player or CD shuttle dont think I have ever used mine.

Try other programs Junx, like Mediamoneky. Maybe not the best, by MUCH better than Itunes.

Sneaky, the iTrip uses radio frequency does it not? If so, how does yours work, as I heard reports that alot of them give bad sound, and can wander horribly. The only one that gets consistently good reviews is the Kensington.
I myself just plug my ipod into my amp, works well enuf but i miss things like balance control and what not.
thanks,
cya
Mine is OK obviosly not as good as when pluged in with cable but I have found that metal like powerlines can affect it. The big challenge is to find a clear frequincy as this improves the quality a lot. Also some cars like Renault which have metal tint in the windows screws it up badly.
oh and always leave the volume on the iPod at only 80% and turn it up on the car sound as it distorts realy badly when set to full blast. All and all im happy with mine but if the Kensington get better reviews ill go for that instead dont have any experiance with it.

yay, I got a renault :(
I will rather get a radio that takes an input, much better way of doing it. Or go for a parametric EQ, it will boost the signal from the ipod (its got a small pre-amp) to a nice voltage, so your amp has a nice strong signal to work with, plus u can fiddle with the frequencies easily.
Thanks for the honest answer though sneaky, hard to get the real facts out there, all manufacturers SWEAR theirs works SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO well :)

My radio has an RCA input. Now, imagine you had an MP3 player with an RCA output that comes standard. Problem solved.
Well, I guess you gotta go what you most comfortable with, but the iPod will have to be chagned *significantly* before you'll see me sporting one.

Jaymac, goto a shop, spend R20 and buy a headphones to RCA cable. Thats what I got plugging into my amp. You now can connect your iPod (or any device with a phones out) to your radio.

Good point Haj. Didn't think of that :o
But the point remains, you still can't do it with video. And I mean, if you buy a video player, you really want to be able to output / input through a TV.

just make sure you get a stereo 3.5mm to RCA :)
