View Full Version : Ubuntu - Linux OS help
I've been really keen to try Linux and move off Windows. I downloaded Fedora 32bit, and somehow the copy I downloaded was corrupt - so I've given up on that since I am not keen to redownload another 3GB of OS.
I came across Ubuntu tonight, and have been reading all the community support on it, including Game support (w00t UTk4 and UTk7 is supported and ALOT of other games) and I have decided to download the 700MB OS.
I'm going to install it tonight when it's done, but before I went ahead and made the leap from Windows, I wanted to get some opinions and feedback from people that have hopefully tried and tested it.
So, if anyone has used it, and has any good or bad information on the OS I would be highly grateful if you could let me know.
Thanks in advance.

beware the hardware support monster.
I've used Ubuntu for a few versions now. Excellent hardware support, and good default software selection, with obviously craploads more available via apt repositories (nice and easy to browse software selection via Ubuntu's "Add/Remove software" application).
However, I cannot, and probably won't for a while, recommend any Linux distribution if you intent using it for gaming. It's ideal for browsing the web, reading your mails, creating documents and spreadsheets, development, etc. (basically everything you use Windows for, except gaming).
Gaming via Wine is still shaky at best, and unless you're playing a game with native OpenGL support (Doom3 engine, Quake 3/4, etc), you're probably going to be buggered. Even with UT2004's Linux support, it's been unplayably slow every time I've tried it.
There are of course a lot of smaller Open Source games you can enjoy on Linux, including lightening-fast OpenGL 3D graphics, however most of them are constantly in beta or alpha, and their quality is generally pretty shabby. There are also a lot of 2D puzzler and sprite-based cheese games.
Basically - stick to Windows if you want to play reasonable games, or use Linux for almost everything else.

I'm a linux peasant, but I found Ubuntu fairly easy to use and understand. It's probably a great place to start learning about Linux, but that's about as far as it goes. Well... it also makes a nice server and does those kinds of things, but not gaming. That's for sure.

luckily your fedora download is corrupt, it's crap anyway, rather stick to ubuntu or something similar.
I would recommend not to use linux as your primary OS, stick it on another PC or HDD if you want to learn, especially if you got no experience with linux.
since we are on the linux subject, does anybody know if there is any decent support for the Marvell wireless lan chipsets yet??
last i had to "jippo" debian with a win98 driver with ndiswrapper...

Marvell Yukon support is a bit fucked in all distros. You need very very very latest kernel just to get the GigE nics to work.
Ok, decided to remain on Windows for now.
All feedback and opinions appreciated.
Thanks.
