View Full Version : Which ANti-Virus?
Well with so many different types of Anti-Virus out there today, all claiming they're the best etc. I was just curious to see which is the most popular by UZA members and why?
So, cast your vote, and if the one you're using isn't listed above, please feel free to tell us here which one you use?
Thanks. :D
PS: I've used many of the above mentioned, including other's which I didn't have enough options to list, but the one I've found which is the best on PC resources, and offers the best protection has to be NOD 32 hands down.
Can't do without it :D

lol, might as well run Plain ol Nothin. Thats how useful Norton is at catching viruses.
NOD32 is the best IMHO, after using McAfee, Norton, Panda, Avast and AVG (in that order)

kaspersky rocks.
Mcfee is a virus in itself, and Norton ain;t much better either.

If anyone wants to buy a nod32 license, PM me :P
Not interested to buy, but how long is the license, and how much and for which version?

I use Avast, it was the only one which could remove a virus I received back in 2004's Rage LAN, it's not a resource monster, it picks up mail viruses before I can open them and it's free. So I'm sticking with it for now.
Norton products used to be good back in the DOS days. But since Symantec took it over I would advise to stay far away from it.
AVG...i'm cheap skate when comes to paying for licences on software :P
Was a long-time AVG fan, but have been using Avast! (also free) for the past two years or so, and haven't looked back. Excellent AV.

Used to use McAfee, but after trying AVG I've been quite pleased. Oh, and my machine no longer takes 30 seconds to shut down :D

BitDefender for me ALL THE WAY.
It has never, ever minimised a game I was busy playing to tell me something stupid or to run some assinine update.
We use BitDefender at work. I can honestly say I've never seen a bigger lump of shit software application in my entire life. Every single person at work, in every department, at every branch, agrees with me, except our IT administrator, who has the final say :) (but he also thinks IE7 is the bomb - you're not our IT administrator, are you, Cataphract? :D).

Avast
I say so because it has a number of protection engines, it's low on resources and is by far the the most customizable......
It has:
Web Shield
Network Shield
Messaging Shield
SMTP Shield
P2P Shield
"Virus Database has been updated" FTW!

I've been using AVG which has been all good for me ...can't remember the last time I had a virus & low on resources too. But now, it's ending in a few days ...no longer free! Noooo. Trying out Avast now...

Crazybob,
I stand to be corrected, but the current free AVG got an upgrade, so you can download that setup and then carry on as per normal. I've done that and it's still ace (and free!).

ROFL!!!! Can't think of any use for Norton! Maybe if you've got the disc you can use it as a coaster!!! :P
I use AVG... seems okay... updates as soon as windows launches, and doesn't bother me at all...

Oh I see, hrmm, well I'm giving Avast a run anyway ...so far I like, and it doesn't append that stupid "Checked by AVG Free Edition" message at the bottom of each email!
Had avast, then i installed nod32, where avast found nothing, nod32 found 5 virusses, haven't seen anything better since..

heh, NOD32 uses much less resources than Avast!. Avast used to be good until they started adding all sorts of shit to it.

I'll try NOD32 out some time. These apps always change over time. BTW, who's still using DR. SOLOMON (DOS) Antivirus? ;)

Just some facts about DOS viruses. :)
- They were written by skilled programmers, not script kiddies.
- They spread just as fast as todays internet viruses. But it was via floppy disks and us being quit fit on our bicycles. You shared games and apps by getting on your bicycle and riding to your friends place. That was the torrents of those days. :)
- They could spraid without the user doing stupid things like opening unsolicited emails.
- There were some famous viruses, such as Stoned Virus (it printed "Your computer is now stoned. Legalize marijuana." on your screen after bootup.). Stoned virus existed on just about every IBM XT home PC of those days.
- In the 80's rumours would spraid that a new virus would be released a certain date, and that on that day everyone should leave their PC's switched off. Since the Internet as you know it today didn't exist yet people actually believed that a PC virus could spread through thin air or perhaps through your power line.
So, there ya have it. :)

Our 10MHz XT Turbo also had Stoned, or rather, just about all the floppies we had were infected. At some point, I think on my 286 I had Tequila virus, one of the viruses I had the most trouble removing, ever. I think DR. Solomon was the first multi-antivirus package I used. Before that you had these little apps that was dedicated to remove a specific virus only. Even Microsoft came out with an antivirus in DOS 6 (MSAV).
Ah yes, and the joy of throwing away boxes of infected floppies :)
