View Full Version : Monte Casino - Which (Italian) Restaurant?

Wonder if you guys could possibly help me here. I want to take a lady I have been seeing for a while out to dinner on her birthday and have decided to take her to Monte Casino (http://montecasino.tsogosun.co.za/live/index.php) as she previously mentioned that she would really like to go there. (Never been there before.)
I'm thinking of taking her to an Italian restaurant but unsure to which one. I have been to Monte Casino only once so don't remember which of the restaurants (http://montecasino.tsogosun.co.za/live/content.php?Item_ID=1680) are ok.
I just want something little romantic, nice atmosphere, peaceful mood, get the picture? Not something like SPUR or DROS for example. No offence to them, I dig their ribs and steaks but obviously this is different.
Which of these (Italian) restaurants (http://montecasino.tsogosun.co.za/live/content.php?Item_ID=1680) are worth it?
Thank you.

I assume the restaurant has to be Italian, which narrows it down to only three. Maestro's, Donatello's or Verdicchio's.
The most inexpensive restaurant on that list by far is Maestro's, and the food is not all that bad. However, it's a pretty normal franchised pizza restaurant so maybe you should give it a miss if you wand to do something different. However, if you do book there, ask them to give you a seat around the back of the restaurant next to the river. (I take those seats every time I eat there becuase they provide a lot more privacy and make it that much better.)
Donatella's makes great food and they are a little more in line with taking a someone special on a date. Not to expensive (well priced actually) but not cheap either. They've got a fair selection of drinka (although I don't know much about wine so I'm probably all wrong) and they have really, really great service IMO. If you book there, you can book to eat upstairs, which is a nice change but sometimes the vibe up there isn't as great as it is downstairs. You can also book to eat on the street, but that's not normally as pleasant for a date (maybe a business lunch, but not a dinner date.)
As for Verdicchio's; I can't honestly comment as truthfully. I vaguely remember eating there once... :P However, they do have a very good name and a reputation for great food. You should probably phone them and check on their menu selection and rough price range before you make up your mind.
Hope that helps :)

Oops, just checked the list and I see that La Scala is also Italian. I have no idea about them. I know the name so they must at least have some sort of reputation.

Virtual, if i may...
I would suggest an italian restuarant that's on Hans Strydom Drive... The name is La Strada and as far as fine cuisine and romance goes this one's at the top of the list. Candle lit dinner with vines and real Italian tins and boxes up on the walls really eludes to the real dinner in venice.
See the one thing i have found with dinner dates is it is always better to keep your date guessing than anything else, the more effort you put into this date the more this young lady will appreciate the sentiment. You might find that taking her our for dinner and then treating to her to a movie and desert at Monte Casino would go down a real hit.
Mystery is 50% of seduction, i am not insuating that you have to seduce her, but if it's romance you are after, give her the most fantastic evening you could imagine for yourself.

Nice wine, romantic music, candle light, me serving you... yar, I'm getting hungry!

Well, you've got the normal dining downstairs inside, the street outside or the upstairs. I normally find that the upstairs is a little more quiet ITO of general chatter and goings on, but maybe that is nice if you are on a private date. (But don't think candle lit quiet, think more like empty quiet) I haven't eaten there for almost a year now so maybe things have changed there.
And as for all the suggesstions about places other than Monte, remember, VF said his GF has never been to Monte and so he wants to take her there. Sure, there are much better restaurants outside of Monte but obviously the guy knows what he's doing. :P

details, we demand details! :P
I can give a first approximation:
1) He picks her up
2) They drive to the place
3) They eat
4) They drive home
Detailed enough? :P
