Come UT2007 who's gonna be putting the most time into it and make an impression on the competetive scene in South Africa, and dare i say the world? :)

In my own experience i know that i had to sacrifice alot to get as far as i did. Cant say its not extremly tempting to do it all again, but being older and wiser now i doubt i can go the whole 9-yards.

Zero, it really depends if UT2007 even make it into pro circles, but I reckon Manta has got the drive. :)
You should go on too, your and excellent player that need that ticket overseas mate!

Nope, I think I have passed my prime, which was pretty crap in the first place. Even if i had the drive, I do not have the raw talent to be any good :(

Well.... I thought I might give it a bash, but then I woke up and realised that I soimply don't have the time, the money and perhaps the skeelz. :)

No, trying to go pro has never crossed my mind.

You miss out on life in the process :)

Nope, too drunk, too high, too busy, too horny and too lazy ... and too drunk. :D

I would say Manta has the drive, yet to be seen if UT2007 will suit him though.

Sam could also make it IMHO. But I know hes gonna be studying / making too muc money and woo'ing the women to go pro :)

True True, especially the last bit :D

I start work (slave labour rather) in Jan, and I have my board exam in March. So even before UT2007 hits, I'm gonna be reduced to a casual gamer.

However if there were Competitions in Durban (like they had in UT99 or so I hear) I would definately give it a go. Probably wouldn't be able to make it to JHB everytime there is a small comp (Finale maybe)

doesnt really cost money to go pro, just time and lots of it.

i would like to see manta go pro as well, the guy needs some reward for the effort he puts in. im sure there're some diamonds in the rough out there that might spark a flame in the competetive scene. The ones that are likely to cut it in the pro scene are the 15-19 year old hardcore no-lifers out there now. im sure there'll be plenty :)

im also sure UT2007 will make it into the competetive scene. its already got ut99, ut2003 and ut2004 behind it. not to mention the adoring fans, myself included.

not having the inherent skills, I'd have to opt for no - but I am certainly play it to the bone and if it is successful I'll join all the LAN's here in CT and play in the comps, even if only to ad some canon fodder

I hope it makes it BIG :D

Plato
18 Dec 2006, 22:34
I`d love to play at a comp. Maybe winning an lcd would be nice, more than that would be silly for me.

Although to be honest, online dueling is helluva fun! There are plenty of guys who provide new challenges and approaches to the game. I don`t think I would ever get bored of playing you guys :)

I don't think I could make gaming my career, even for a little while.
I`d rather do well in my degree and get a cushy research/development position :D

{Well thats what I`m aiming for anyway :P}

Hell... I'd really want to go pro! :P

I keep on wanting to slap myself for only starting 2 months back, but seeing that I only finished studyin and started working this year, I couldn't afford ADSL before, and I only started LAN'ing (propper big LANs), in May this year, so ye... :/

But come UT2K7, and it's in the same league as UT2K4, well then I might just give it a bash, and work at my game as hard as I've done these past 2 months! :D

Anyhow, cheers!

Personally I play games cuase I enjoy it and dont wanna go "pro". It would be too much of a schlep to practice a few hours every single day on one game only, that wont be fun for me and isnt what I want from gaming. Besides that, I simply dont have the talent! I get pwned much of the time and it really doesn't bother me cause I play games for the enjoyment it gives me.
Nah, gimme bots, gimme a LAN now and then (ADSL please!!!) and I'm a happy chappy!

NB. But I do support gaming as a sport. So good luck to you all who want to make a living out of it!

Z-1 i would really love to try if it the game goes pro but how do you get that far in?

=_sNaKe_=
19 Dec 2006, 08:49
I have to say I'm with VirtualForce on this one. I used to practise for a set period of time (against bots) every night so that I could go toe to toe with the guys at the CT LANs and, to be honest, once I started working and had less time on my hands, that drive just went away.

That incessant, repetitive playing of one game robbed me of the fun I could have with so many other games, something I'm currently doing (with DoW : Dark Crusade and replaying NFS UG2 :P).

Don't get me wrong, I loved every minute of the UT LANs, but my need to improve was getting the better of me so, in a sense, by not practising UT I'm saving myself from myself :D

GM<Jaymac>MF
19 Dec 2006, 12:25
That's exactly how I feel Snake.

Getting so hecticly into one game takes so much time inside that game that you start neglecting other things in life.

Snake in my opinion why you felt this way is that you went about training the wrong way, what i think is you must have talent in the game and the head for it. Just training for 2 blind hours against bots isn't going to teach you much or as much as it would teach you by playing against a good human player. Ibeleive there should be purpose to each time you practice i.e. improving you map control etc? You have to find a way to practice and improve while still enjoying it

Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed my practise time and I had variations ie one weapon at a time, item timings, vs multiple opponents etc so it wasn't a mundane, routine approach (as far as possible), but the fact that I don't have ADSL and my only human opponents were at LANs approximately once a month, frankly, sucked.

I just started getting really competitive and, as a result, neglected my other games and this wasn't what I wanted from my gaming time. It became less and less about just having mindless fun and more and more about beating the next guy.

GM<Jaymac>MF
19 Dec 2006, 14:53
That's the other problem to going pro; money. Let's be honest, in order to be at the top of one's game, one needs things like ADSL. Not to mention a top of the line machine. I don't think anything less than R10k is going to cut it if you want to go really big.

I think that's why I'm delaying getting ADSL. I just know the opportunity to practise against real, live people basically everyday will be too much temptation :D

Oh, that and dealing with Telkom ;)

I'm 25... perhaps it's not the time to be starting a career in professional gaming.... however i would love to get involved in some local tournaments etc etc.

Jon if i may humbly say, you still have the competitive edge and you are obviously naturally skilled at the game. Sure, getting used to the playing style and the maps might be something you would need to look at, however once u are into the game, you should be back up to scratch in abs no time.

You could go far with minimal effort i think.

True, I blame DoTA for the lack of RTS players :P

Haven't played Company Of Heroes yet. Is it a military-style RTS? I like my Sci-Fi / Fantasy games, hence UT and not another rehashed WWII game ;)

I haven't played company of Heroes but i will give it a try, i'm a huge fan of warcraft 3(not really a dota fan) and C&C Generals i cant wait for the 3 one :D

Unfortunately we dont have many really skilled RTS players in SA that are well known :(

I've always been a little more of a RTS fan :) (a little more i love both genres though)

Lets not forget about the Spanish(?) q3 player Akillies who lost narowly to the Russian player Cooller in the WCG finals years ago in probably whats known as the greatest pro-q3tourney4 game ever at the ripe old age of 40-something! Cooller was about 16 i think. older = wiser, younger = faster!

I'll definately give UT2007 a bash. my experience will help alot and ofcourse knowning whats involved in going pro. a while back i was even speaking of a trip overseas when its released and gaining that valuable xp i had with UT2004 when i was in the UK dueling the top guys from demo to just after release.

It all depends on how much u put in at the end of the day.
