finally finished Gears of War last night (yes, that little Unreal Engine 3 game on X360) and in the end it was a bitter-sweet victory. Sweet, because it was possibly one of the best action shooters ever created but bitter, because it all ended so quick without much warning.

Gears takes the FPS genre and turns it on its head. Gone are run and gun tactics and dodge jumping, and in is a new cover system that makes all other shooters feel broken. It is a very simple concept, but done remarkably well. Press A on the controller to sprint (with and excellent desert storm like war cam effect) and if you are close enough to cover, you character will slam his back against it and can either take blind shots, or get up and aim at the enemy.

The mechanic is pretty similar to Halo actually. You have no health bar, just a certain amount of punishment you can take before you die. If you reach cover in time, you will recover health and continue on. It might sound simplistic, but it keeps the action fast paced with no down time or hunting for health kits. You also only carry 2 two handed weapons at a time, one pistol and a few grenades. If you find another gun on the battle field, it is sometimes a hard choice to decide to swap your weapons around. Do I want a sniper and a shotgun, or drop the sniper for a gun with faster rounds, but lack the ranged punch? It is very simple in concept but works.

You spend the entire game with at least 1 team mate at your side and AI from the team (and the enemy) are really good. Not once did I shout in frustration, and even when the messed up, you can go resurrect them. It is not a squad type shooter so don't expect intriquate order commands, it is an action marathon with another buddy delivering punishment next to you.

Then of course the graphics, the glorious-glorious graphics. Cliff and his team sure made a great advertisement for the Unreal Engine 3. Not only are the models detailed down to the scars on their faces, but little subtle effects makes it great to look at. Heat haze from the gun's nozzle, dust blowing up when you slam your back against cover, windows breaking, proper rain, beautiful water - you have it all. The last stage you find yourself on a train that instantly reminded me of an Assault map in UT2004. Except 10x prettier, more grimy, and essentially proof that this engine will power UT2007 and other games with the same graphics splendor.

The action is frequently interrupted by in-engine cut-scenes and they are perfect to set the mood, and does have a kind of Hollywood block buster flair to them, especially a scene where a chopper comes crashing to the ground and your team are forced to shoot their way to safety. It is done very well.

All isn't just honey and roses however. The game does become a bit samey at places. Checkpoint, cover, mow enemies down, checkpoint, cover, mow enemies down - it gets tired at stages, especially in the almost filler stages "the long road home". It doesn't help either that there are no more than a handful of enemy types. There are enough cut-scenes and variations on the theme (especially the brilliant driving stage), but some more enemies and variation would have kept it fresher for longer.

The ending also comes way too quick. After trying numerous times (must have been 20 retries) to kill a particularly hard boss, I Googled the solution only to discover that it was in fact the last boss. What? But...but...I am not done yet! The fight is far too quickly over where those familiar cut-scenes basically finish the story from that point. It is a satisfying story, but felt a bit quick.

I haven't touched multiplayer, but you can do the entire single player game in either split screen, system link or Xbox Live. There are also standard DM modes and few others. It seems Epic even has a surprise for Xmas ever this year. Perhaps new maps?

All in all a title the X360 can be proud to call its own exclusive. It is a remarkable game that takes meat and potatoes simplicity and give you some chili to spice it up.

9/10.

nice write up :D

I am curious to find how your 'crouch, cover and fire' would work in player vs player though ... is there such a thing? and will this ever be available on the PC?

(I don't play consoles - nothing against them really - I just don't)

Nice write up Gamos :) I've seen in game demos' of this game, and your description does seem to sum it up good !

Thanks.

Multiplayer will have a map with enough walls, car wrecks and other things to take cover behind, while you aim and shoot or lob grenades at the enemy. Or get a buddy to give supressive fire while you try and flank them. It must be a riot, and I will definately use my free 48 hour Xbox Live Gold card that comes with the game to give it a spin.

The nice thing is that you have a chainsaw bayonett on one of your guns, so if you time it right and you can "sneak" to an enemy's cover, you can give him a chainsaw in the face. :D
There's also a clever reloading mechanic, that once you run out of bullets, you can just reload like normal, but if you press a button at a specific time, if will reload in half the time and give extra damage, but miss time it and you gun jams making reloading twice as long.

I wish I could capture footage to show you okes. It is a riot. :)

FluX and I did the full campaign in co-op over Live, and it was a blast. Although you are going over the exact same levels as in the single player, it's a completely different, even more enjoyable experience. The tactics which can be devised, the helping each other out of sticky situations, the support and covering fire you can give each other, it's just an awesome experience. If you have the option of Live co-op, you should definitely make use of it.

As for multi-player, as you've probably gathered from most reviews, the three available gametypes are all pretty much exactly the same (TDM), however they are a lot of fun for a few rounds. After playing it night after night online, it does unfortunately get a little old. 4 vs 4, on the same 10 (?) small maps again and again, pretty much executing the exact same routine again and again, does drag the experience down a little. I think more and larger maps, with higher player numbers (6 vs 6, 8 vs 8 perhaps?) would go a long way to extending the enjoyment factor.

One of the most frustrating multi-player "gameplay" options, is sticking grenades to enemies. Some people online tend to make this their entire mission in the game, round after round, and it's nearly inescapable, unless you can zap someone in the head with a shotgun round, they'll dash up to you, plonk a grenade on you, and run away. Nobody ever actually *throws* grenades at all. It's a seriously irritating "tactic" and further removes from the enjoyment of the multi-player game unfortunately.

Good review.

The sound adds a lot to the game too. It really gives your character some weight. I turn the sound up just to feel the bass from the thud you hear when he leaps over objects.

The introduction really had me going. I've never really played the Xbox before and I wasn't used to the controller. The game shows no mercy, you're immediately thrown into a combat situation and your character just leaving prison doesn't at all admit to any kind of rustyness and I was well into the worrying stage already right there.

Everything went well from then on, I was stunned by the graphics the whole time and the controls were getting better.
By the time the end of the first scene came on and the helicopter cut scene starts, I already had sweaty palms - I was so glad it was just a cut scene, I wasn't so lucky in the next part.

Sounds like you went Left (combat) rather then Right (training) at the beginning :P.

Very nice writeup Gamos, if I could afford it I would walk into a shop today and get myself a copy of GoW with a 360.

Just some questions, do you guys play on normal CRT TV or do you own an HD TV set? If you do, would it still be good on old fashioned 72cm CRT TV? Also, how many hours of campaign gameplay do you get out of GoW more or less?

I play on a SD 72cm TV and it still looks stunning. However, most games have text that is very hard to read and GoW is no exception. I would really recommend the VGA cables and computer screen as the poor man's HD fix or at least the best connection (component) you can on SDTV.

It is hard to tell how long the single player is, since I only played a few hours here and there over the course of a few weeks. 10-15 perhaps? Pretty standard for FPSes nowadays. Of course you get co-op single player with increased difficulty levels, so you might get great replayability out of it with a buddy.

There is also a booming online multiplayer community and some map packs already.

I got me one of them 37" HD LCD's, instead of upgrading my PC.. :p

Thx Gamos, thats exactly what I wanted to know.

*sigh* Thallium, I should be able to afford an HD TV together with an XBox360 in the year 2048. I guess I shouldn't complain too much as I have a fairly high spec PC at least, although that is quickly going to run out of steam once the new generation games are released. Guess one can't always have everything that one desires hey. :P If I do get a 360 it will have to do on my current TV or 19" LCD.

/me flexes his e-peen by mentioning he plays Gears on a 42" plasma.

I've played through Gears 3 times now, twice in co-op and once in single player. On average, I'd say there's around 6-8 hours of gameplay, if you don't rush through everything too much.

Sweet cheeses... I got a crappy little 34cm TV that I don't even use, but my PC is pretty noice... I'm not REALLY a console type of guy... but after seening a live demonstration of GoW... that has changed... I think I'll prolly get a PS3 or Xbox360 at some stage in my life... :P But not too sure when... prolly only just before the PS4 or Xbos 900 (Tony Hawk signature :P), hits... lol
