all the kings mice (http://www.esreality.com/?a=post&id=1265679)
being a mx518 man meself, I was not surprised to see it scored well
I can honestly say that changing to this mouse has been one of the biggest positive influences on my game - that and a real gamer pad :P
wot beasties do you all have and why?

MX518 user and proud of it!
Glad it did so well. Kind of makes me feel better for getting the 518 a few weeks before the G5 came out. :P
hehe G5 user and proud of it :) (same as the mx518 just newer anyway :))
Sam told me he was using an MX518, when i was using an MX900 (yuck), and I thought maybe I could pwn him if I bought an MX518. Looks like I haven't set it up right... yet. :)
damn after reading that i'm soma dissapointed in my G5, should have gotten an mx518 :( but i love the weight cartridge though :)

razer DB. Used to use mx510, but decided to change. Both good mice, but prefer my DB atm, nice and small, easy to flick :)

going just on these 'scores' would be a mistake - as it is with all benchies methinks:rolleyes: stats and benchmarks are fun but in the end the difference lies with the man behind the mouse
a pro with a ball mouse will still kick ass :D thank the gods we've moved on from those ... erm I hope we moved on? any one still on ball??
glad to meet all my fellow mx518 users tho :D:D

An MX518 man myself. I have always told alot of guys looking to go up to a "better" lazer mouse that the difference is actually miniscule if any at all. Never knew it was a step down though. 0_o
<---- Leftie! SCREW YOU LOGITECH!
I'm really impressed by the optical mice in that review. Interestingly, I've found the Diamondback to the best mouse I've used overall and I still gave it away despite that impression.
I drank the Kool-Aid and ended up with a Copperhead a week later, the MX518 is back on the table though. I can't say I've experienced any issues going the laser route (that includes the G5, the Copperhead and the G3) despite being a low sensitivity player.
The Razer Krait (http://www.prophecy.co.za/razer-krait-black-with-orange-light-1600dpi-optical-6400-p-2312.html) is certainly carrying a lot of appeal and at the price, it's a worthy spare. There's something about Razer that Logitech can't touch and that's Razer's buttons. The middle click feels like any other primary button and they don't wear out in a few months either.
roflol @ the Creative Fatal1ty getting such a crap score.
Those "fatality" mice are damn ugly and i cant imagine them being comfortable either, i dont even think that the lame ass weight in the middle would be of any use either? Not much of a fan when it comes to products with the fatality name on it though
Has anyone ever tried overclocking their usb port? Does it help?

I personally had a major problem wit hthe placing of the buttons on the Diamondback. I kept on hitting them by mistake (which is a little irritatiign IMO.) :)

Razer Copperhead.
IMO it's definitely the Indian that counts and not the arrow.
Used Logitech MX500 & 510 for ages now. Loved it.
Using the limited edition Razer Diamondback atm, doing a god job.
I love my MX510 :D. Lasted years and years, I couldn't ask for a better mouse :).

I also got a mx510. great mouse. I am a medium to hiugh sense player and I love my little bugger. its got 800 dpi vs the 400 of the mx500(which scored well), I love the size and button locations, all I need now is a new gaming pad, mine is very old and worn and jut kak.

I have to strongly disagree with this review done on ESreality.
First off the reason manufactures went from optical to laser was to make the change from a slow to fast movement more fluid and dynamic i.e. tracking a player and then immediately flicking onto another player. Having a laser mouse has a linear transfer. Let me explain.
If I took a pencil and put it on a machine that would tap a piece of paper and make a dot every 0.1sec. Now if I pulled that paper at a consistent rate and then immediately pulled that piece of paper as hard as I could, I would get a exponential change in the distance between the dots. This represents an optical mouse and a loss in detail over the change in speed, regardless of sensitivity or dpi.
If I did the exact same thing to a laser mouse, it would be a consistent line no matter what the change is speed or sensitivity is.
Secondly any player that is going to exceed 1m/s has to have some rather large fore arms and be quite a crappy player since he would never be able to have any close combat skill.
One of my biggest gripes about this review is that ergonomics was not taken into consideration. I know a lot of you guys use the mx518, so I would want you to make this small and simple test:
Where your thumb would usually rest on the mouse is on the rubber thumb print. Now instead of placing your thumb in that position, reallocate it to the edge of the mouse where your thumb is touching your mouse pad. I guarantee that your aim and tracking will improve. Why you may ask? The answer is because you are offering your own control to mouse in terms of its friction coefficient. So ideally you would push your thumb hard against the pad when tracking a player and have it gently pushed against the pad when using precision weapons. This is an ergonomics flaw.
Going a bit further, I would take each mouse on the smoothest surface I could find and detach the mouse cable. I would then slide the mouse across this surface to see if the mouse slides across the pad without changing direction as this would tell me that the mouse has the Teflon pads correctly positioned. I did this to my old Razer Diamondback and found the front of the mouse would always push forward.
Mouse weight is very important but what about weight distribution. If you had to take a MX mouse and try to balance it, you would find that all the weight sits at the back. This means that you will always have too much drag in the mouse. Take the time and notice how you shoot, you will probably have awesome tracking and precision shots on target. However try doing some snap shots or flick shots, I can put good money that 7/10 shots you will miss regardless of how much you practice. The Razer is the exact opposite of this.
Just my 2c’s

Interesting thoughts Naut. I would agree that I've always found my MX518 heavy at the back, ergonomic "correctness" is different to everyone because of their body and posture. What about a mouse with a moldable body, like high-end in-ear headphones? :) Unfortunately, nobody is going to let me take home an expensive mouse just to try it out.
That's an awful lot of theory behind simple "point and click" input :D.

No problem. With the mouse pad it's around about what my setup was a year ago.

That was the interesting part. But I don't think I do that.
btw Naut, Added you to MSN, but you don't seem to be online ? Ever..

interesting read naut, thx
tried it now vs a bot ... not a good run - had to concentrate too hard on keeping my thumb down
I'll keep this in mind though and look into it some more before making up my mind
for teh record - I also tried playing without a x-hair and feel my lg accuracy dipped somewhat (not as much as I would have thought!) but my shock combo seemed spot on somehow??? shock prim also took a bit of a dive but being able to fire in quick succession brought me on target
I like my x-hairs tho, so won't experiment too far with this

I ideally would love to do the same test as ESreality have done, however take it to the next level in terms of surface, friction, erogonomics. I ideally would also like to make a survery which would envolve the ZA community. With a variety of different mice and time (which I have now), I personally think I could come up with a benchmark for mice.
For example, here is one of the tests I would do:
We all know the maximum distance a mouse can travel before it skips. However has anybody thought how much the mouse needs to move before it responds?
The only problem is that I would need sponsors.

I wish I was rich ...
Naut maybe you could talk to Eradicator he is my boss at Eclipse Networks in Witbank maybe he might be able to organise something?
A little info for your benchmark, i use the razer mantis mouse pad (best mouse pad i've ever seen) i;ve seen a lot of players using it could you please include it in your benchmark? I personally think the speed version is would work better and is better quality :)
I dont even have a mouse pad ... lollies
A wooden plank :D
roflmoa, dont spill your coffee on it, it could rot :)

I thought I would just give a quick update. There are a few people here that are interested in sponsoring my mouse research and review. So I am now seriously going to be taking on this project over the course of what is left of this year and hopefully be finished by end of January.
If you want to help out in any way, that would be highly appreciated.

I've always been a Razer fan bit 3 Razers broken in 6 months made me look elsewhere..... I bought a G5 & a G7 for "testing" purposes and man I love the wireless G7 much more, very well balanced imo and not too heavy either. As for mice in the past I loved my Logitec Dual Optical allot and the MX1000 has got to be the worst mouse ever. BTW the Fatal1ty mouse is really not that bad it's not pretty but it works well give it a try....
