View Full Version : Outbursts, Episodes and Unacceptable Play

Dear Community
Rather crude language is quickly finding its way back onto the servers.
Please note that the rules are not going to be relaxed.
I have noticed however, that in some cases the anger was directly related to (or provoked by) gratuitous spawnraping and spawn camping.
I find this more offensive than swearing, quite honestly, but it is very difficult to monitor. I get spawnraped a good deal but I don't believe anyone should be a judge in their own case. I just live with it.
However, I do want to appeal to all members to play this hooligan's game like gentlemen (and the occasional lady) and not to intentionally or gratuitously drive each other up the walls or, heaven forbid, away from the game.
Cheers
CAT

I think many people become accustomed to the way we converse on these forums and drag the bad language into the game ;p
You saying people swear cause they get spawn raped? its part of the game, get real.
swearing is a problem, spawn raping/camping etc is not and never should be. It can be avoided. ppl who swear because of it are, quite frankly, noob.

Pretty much says it all.
I made of one my legendary polls about this a few months ago: 27-5 agreed Spawn Raping was part of the game. Just adapt to it.
So now if you "catch" someone spawnraping, what will you do?
Ban them for possibly provoking foul language?

part of the game my arse.
I left the server last night because in a TDM game the entire team was camping out a spawn point with rocket launchers and flack canons (suggesting they had actualy come all the way from the other end of the damn map just to get their rape on)
If you're that lame go play CS.
I'm glad you can avoid 3 people tripple loading at you at the same time assault rifle or not. Even if you do you get away you have 10 HP and get sniped half a second later.

Nope. Unfortunately sooner rather than later I'll have to stop turning a blind eye to the people who get upset and swear. And the feeling I have is that its not entirely their fault.

does the game not have a ESRB rating for blood & violence? also does it not say online play might differ? Meaning people will be spawn raping and swearing? I don't mind it if okes swear but I do know there are some young kids playing the game with the permission of their parents so some of the language needs to be toned for sure as for the spawnraping.... who cares....

I just have to laugh when people get offended by swearing. You do realise that linguistic symbols are entirely arbitrary, right? You do know that "shit" means exactly the same as "poo", and "fuck" exactly the same as "have sex" (when used as a verb), don't you? Actually, if we're going to get technical (which I am), neither "shit" or "fuck", when used as exclamations, mean anything other than "strong expression of annoyance, laughter, astonishment, etc" - and there's nothing "obscene" about that, now is there?
Sex, for example, is no longer a taboo topic in our society, yet the word has retained its pejorative qualities from older dialects of English. The same applies to certain words in most modern languages. If you're offended by "fuck," you're being irrational, unless the idea of sex truly disgusts you (in which case you have far bigger problems than "crude language").
Basilisk - when you go to your next/ future job interview:
Please throw in a couple of F- words
I am sure your prospective employer will share your point of view on linguistics.
Karnaugh
02 Aug 2006, 17:01
My current employer didn't give a shit...
I think you'll find that very few would mind, unless they are people you probably don't want to work for anyway.
As correct ask bsk is, in society it's simply treated as a form of disrespect. If fuck and shit didn’t exist, there would be others words to replace them. Their insinuations are what piss people off, not the actual phrase used.
There's also the use of these words which can get fuzzy online. When a person tells you to Fuck off irl, depending on their tone, it can be a total joke or very serious.
And unfortunately because this 'tone' doesn’t exist online, many people just take swearing seriously by default.
The_Basilisk
02 Aug 2006, 17:04
Mudda: So, essentially, we should carry on doing something because that's the way it's always been done, right?
Firstly, for a job interview you would use formal standard English, which excludes a large number of words/phrases along with swear words. You'd get the same negative reaction from saying "YO WASSUP DAWG".
Secondly, this is not a job interview, it's a mode of adult recreation, just like football or rugby. Are you going to tell me nobody swears during physical sports? If you let your kids play, they have to adapt to the adult world as they would if you let them play football with other over-eighteens. Incidentally, they already do swear like troopers at school. No amount of overprotectiveness will change that.
Thirdly, if I ever walk into a job interview, I'll consider my life worthless.
Karnaugh
02 Aug 2006, 17:09
As correct ask bsk is, in society it's simply treated as a form of disrespect.
Thats a very old, and very incorrect idea. Society actualy doesn't work that way. Language varies from culture to culture, people offended by swearing or who think it's a sign of "disrespect" is actualy a very tiny minority. I think you'll find you've been brainwashed by hippies.
The_Basilisk
02 Aug 2006, 17:11
JKR: It's the god damn internet. You shouldn't be taking anybody seriously, except when you're properly acquainted with them, in which case the context of the discussion should be more than enough to distinguish tone.
Also, don't forget we talk about "tone" as a quality in literature.
Just to clarify, I'm not anti-swearing on the servers at all. I swear 20 times a second during the day.
It's a fact many people do take swearing seriously. You've explained why they shouldn’t; I'm just trying to understand the other side of the picture; why they do.

Peon. "Manners" and "respect" are entirely relative, that's my point.
The only ways to fairly negotiate between different cultures are 1) abolish culture altogether, which is what we should do, but most people aren't able to function without a cultural structure in place; and 2) practise tolerance, which is the most practical.
In simple terms: embrace what you like, ignore what you don't, but don't impose your beliefs on others. And before you comment that "LOLZ BUT YUO ARE IMPOSEEING UR BELIEVES ON US BIE SWAERING," I'm not trying to modify your behaviour (ie, depriving you of choice), whereas you're distinctly trying to modify mine (ie, trying to deprive me of my choice).
Basilisk, if I may comment without sounding homosexual, I think that your posts here were well thought out and superbly written.

while I agree 100% with bsk his argument is based on a false premise - that of a perfect world
saying this is the way things "should be" does not alter the reality of how things in fact "are"
and respect is not so relative that it can not cross boundaries and cultures - granted respect between friends is displayed differently than say strangers (opposite of the spectrum) Certain behavior can always be construed as respectful and others will always be dis-respectful
do unto others as you would have done unto yourself

Try this.
You in a conversation with a girl online or offline and you swear an average amount. They wont appreciate it. Thats the type of decency towards an individual im talking about, and that is how we get back to the thread's point. Curbing profanities to make the general experience enjoyable for all.
Sure one can do as one pleases. But dont stuff it up for everyone else.

Should have said it 94 times.... Fuck this song is crap....
Anyways.... On the subject.... Swearing is a part of everyday life. Certain people you swear in front of, and others you don't. Yes, it slips out everynow and again when it shouldn't.
As for online... IMO, Who gives a shit? You here to have fun and play a game. Yes some people get carried away with it. If it bothered me, I would simply tell them to STFU! And ignore them... And I would do the same if you were standing next to me swearing at me...
"Mudda: So, essentially, we should carry on doing something because that's the way it's always been done, right?"
nope: Thats not what I said.
What i said in between my lines was that although you may be able to use similar words to express yourself - the context in which are used will differ.
When you are with mates and you need be the "alpha-male" you will be probably "chune" you bros something similar to igloo's song.
When you are with gran ma and gran pa - i doubt you would go around expressing yourself in quite the same way.
Some people are offended by it - I think they should at least have their opions respected.
It however will not change the world, but at least spare a thought for the innocent.

I Do!
I think the point here, is that regardless of our personal thoughts on bad language, attitudes, age restrictions, etc, the no swearing rule is decided not by us, not by the server admins, but by SGS.
Unfortunately, as long as we are playing on SGS servers, we have to abide by the SGS rules.
While I think swearing is often unnecessary, and do not swear myself, I have always been strongly opposed to the SGS ROE and the mostly ridiculous set of rules it sets out, as the games they host are all age restricted to at least 17, and I do not feel that adults, in an adult environment, should watch themselves so carefuly in case Jonny's irresponsible parents do not care about what he is playing, or allow him to play these games, then complain when they see other people's behaviour around innocent Jonny.
However, sad as it may be, SGS does have these rules, and as long as we are playing on SGS servers, we need to play by their rules.
<Applause> Well said Shrimp.

Honestly, we should be opposing, not complying with those rules. A relaxed attitude from our admins would go a long way towards this. Ban people who are truly being disruptive or abusive, but not the guy who says "rofl, that was fucking brilliant" or "fuck this lag."
Basilisk,
maybe you can give some input on how things are done on the SGS Quake4 servers.
Boogey,

03 Aug 2006, 12:31
relaxed admins? If i were more relaxed, my heart would stop beating.
I am a very relaxed admin, having perhaps kicked 2 ppl in my entire 'career'. I have not luckily been prithe to too much swearing on the servers, but I have turned the blind eye every now and then during a clannie or a closed game.
However, if I want to stay an admin, I would have to uphold the rules. Yes, I will access each situation as it arises, but if you are blatantly breaking the rules, I will be forced to punish you as the ROE sees fit.
The alternative is for me to do nothing, get kicked at being an admin, which will bugger quite a bit up IMHO as I am one of the few admins that play UT and sets up servers regularly.
So just use your brain, if you have to actually press a buttoin to type, then finger in a string of profanaties, it is not 'accidental' like doing it over the mic or in person. So just think before you act, easy peasy.
Or, you can buck against the whole world, and try and change everyones opinion.
Basilisk: I have tried and tried, over and over, for years and years, through multiple games. Every argument you make, no matter how logical or reasonable, no matter how well, or delicately you put things, all falls on deaf ears. I have argued against the ROE to the point of almost being banned from their forums on more than one occasion (obviously it's preferable to not be banned, since they have no other form of communication, besides ignored emails and an IRC channel full of CS kiddies).
At the end of the day, even if they ban every single player from the game and their forums, no matter how much noise is made in opposition, there is simply no way to get the ROE relaxed, improved or removed. In fact any ROE debate is strictly discouraged it would seem. I would also like somewhere to play online, with more than a bot. Even a mass exodus to MWeb would not phase SGS in the least, but merely get the MWeb/Gamezone supporters banned from all SGS servers and forums (yes, this has happend a few times).
SGS is a typical Telkom institution, and we know how open Telkom are to debate and common sense.
Haja makes another very good point. If the current admins were to be seen as ineffective, they would be removed, and we'd be back to square one - nobody representing the actual players. In the past, the UT servers were administered by random generic admins at SGS, who knew very little about the actual game, good setups/rules, etc. It was also impossible to hold clan matches or any formal event, as they would never respond to any amount of requests for that sort of thing, and nothing was ever updated or maintained.
Boogeyman
03 Aug 2006, 12:46
True Shrimp...thing is there are a handfull of admins who control SGS servers ovearll and they have their own jobs to do. Changing the ROE would be very very last item on their packed agenda.
Gamos..lekker bro..just finished exams yesterday...got bored this year so i decide to do my CFP and hopefully an MBA which will take another year.
CSS [N]aja are going to compete at rAge in Sept....hope some of the JHB boys will come say howzit!
We also putting up a naja website in the next 2 weeks..I will correspond with Haja so we can include the UT family.
Great news Boogey. Yeah, I might make a turn at Rage if the mood takes me.
Shrimpo, you make a good point. Farting against the wind is all fighting the ROE is. One day bandwidth will become cheap, static IPs the norm and every clan can host their own server with their own rules. Oneday... </dream>

I'm trying to get my wife into gaming, and its pretty hard since most woman just don't think its that much fun. So the other night she's watching me play UT and suddenly a string of curse words appear at the bottom of the screen. I quickly glance towards my wife and see her flinging as she read the words. I keep quite but I know what she is thinking. She is a loving, quite and soft person and easily gets offended by this stuff. Perhaps gaming is not the place for her, but all I'm asking is this: On the servers, please think before you type. Whatever you think about the world and the people living on, and the rules people enforce, not everyone feels the same way. You are deeply offending someone somewhere, and if you don't care about it, then perhaps you shouldn't earn the level of respect you are trying to achieve.

Sorry, hang on.
What are admins there for?
For running the server. Making sure it runs properly, quickly, is updated, gets new maps etc, meets standards of whatever target audience expects. Making sure people don't cheat, etc.
When the FUCK did being an admin become about teaching children about their language, making sure people act like good little christians to have the luxury of playing on their server?
I'm sorry, but untill the REAL reason for an admin starts getting taken care of I'm not about to give a flying fuck about what they think about my language. Do your job properly before you start telling ME how to behave because that isn't the job of an admin.
And I'm not talking about the stub admins, I'm talking about SGS's main admins.

Settings -> HUD -> Chat lines. Change to 0 and shut the fuck up thanks. The same can be done for VOIP. If you don't like what gets said you can take plenty of steps YOUR SELF to stop from seeing it rather than restricting everyone else.

Shrimp: not once have I seen a main SGS admin playing on the UT servers, or the Quake 4 for that matter. They are all CS and BF2 players, and honestly don't give a shit about the other communities (incidentally, to answer your question, nobody plays on the SGS Q4 servers, since they are horribly out of date).
I don't think they would notice the admins here being relaxed, and if they did, I don't think they would care.
Haja: I've always considered you to be a fair and reasonable admin. My comment was geared mainly towards Cataphract, who is the only person (other than The Proven) who's threatened to ban me for swearing.

What about my opinion? All I'm asking them to do is to tolerate me. They're asking me to change who I am. I think the latter is by far the bigger infringement.
Well I myself don't mind swearing, but I guess it's SGS's rules, and if you want to play on the server you have to abide by the rules, like a school's rules, if you don't live by then while at school, they throw you out :/.
I myself swear a bit too much too nowadays
Umm... uhhh someone make a profanity filter????? It can't be THAT hard to make?

Settings -> HUD -> Chat lines. Change to 0 and shut the fuck up thanks. The same can be done for VOIP. If you don't like what gets said you can take plenty of steps YOUR SELF to stop from seeing it rather than restricting everyone else.
Listen dude (wanted to call you something else but used constraint instead, something you obviously have little off), I never said I cared about the cursing. I said some people do, how was I supposed to know you were going to curse (yes it was you but I didn't wish to point fingers). It's amazing that you see yourself as an intelligent animal yet you can't show any form of restraint, you simply have to use profanities to get your point across, you can't have a conversation like any decent person. Perhaps you are just a pig and you want everyone else to be one too? I really don't care about you and your little fits, so just go ahead and do what you do best, mmmkay?
I am too old to listen to (or worry about) you young'uns sticking it to the man. Feel free to create your own server or boycott SGS. Sheesh.

But some people are prepared to compromise, where if something doesn't go your way, you throw a fit. So you want to liberate the world with your views, go do it somewhere else would you. Thats not very logical. Why should he turn off all comunication to avoid your profanity. It's like saying that if you dont appreciate spawnraping campers you should quit UT. B.T.W. changing who you are might not be such a bad thing if you enjoy verbally attacking every person you meet. I do however agree with you that saying sumthing like "that's teh funniest fucking thing I have ever seen! Bwahahaha" is very different form sayin "fuck off and die you fucking retard".

It's not swearing, or the words you use, its what you're actually saying that makes something profane.
If you're offended by words like "fuck" and "shit" no matter what context they are used in, then you might as well be offended by every other word in the English language.
On that basis, you should turn off the chat box.
How about a poll?
Swearing is ok, as long as it is not used to atack and insult plaers.
Swearing can be used in any way even to attack and insult players.
Swearing is taboo.
But I guess it wont really make a difference because the servers belong to sgs.

Unfortunately human's interpretations of a string of words are a little more complex than that. To dummify something as complex as a language to mere words is pretty insane in my view.

Karn, you make some valid points, especially about what opi@te agreed with i.e. saying "fuck that was brilliant", but, simply put, there are certain standards in place in society and you can either roll with the punches and make your life easier, or you can disagree vehemently (even though all you will probably accomplish is to know that "you are right") but what will that accomplish?
I know it's sucky to just conform (I hate that word, it reminds me of Goths), but truth be told, its alot easier than fighting a battle you'll likely never win.
Karnaugh
04 Aug 2006, 10:30
but, simply put, there are certain standards in place in society
Actualy, I'm saying the opposite. There are standards in *your* society. The majority of people are actualy not concerned with swearing, and don't take offense to it.
It's called tollerance.
Not swearing is a religious belief, as is anti-semetisim and anti-homosexuality and racism.
Are you saying that black people, jews and gays are also not allowed on our servers?
Gents (and lady), despite the biting remark here and there, I think this debate has gone down quite well, certainly for the UZA standard. ;)
Allow me to add my 2c.
I think both parties are basing some points from their side of the debate, on assumptions that can't be proven.
Karnaugh, can you matter of factly state that the "majority" aren't concerned about swearing? Just because your circle of friends and family doesn't mind, can you really assume the majority don't? For that matter, do you know more people than others to lend some proof to those assumptions, or are you familiar with the majority of the community's stance? If your answer is "no" to any of those questions, you are as much responsible for keeping yourself in check, as others are to not take offence with your (or anyone's) general swearing.
Likewise on the flipside of the coin, just because "you" feel offended (or your wife like in Maximus' case), doesn't mean the rest of the community is. All questions in the above paragraph could be asked again, and once again a misassumption could be the non-factual root of the debate.
In the end there are - fact - some users that do take offence, and there are other users - fact - that don't take offence. Can we not meet halfway? Tolerate (or town down) the swearing, but also try not to insult (or feel insulted) when it happens.
I am pretty sure if you read the first post made by Cat that is exactly what he is asking.
Edit: Spelling.

You left out "in my experiences".
Are you saying that black people, jews and gays are also not allowed on our servers?
That's blowing it a little out of proportion.
All I'm saying, is that there are rules and if you want to play (as in any sport), adhere to them. Whether or not you feel you're right or wrong is, at the end of the day, only going to be your personal opinion.
Unfortunately, whether or not the majority are pro-swearing or not, SGS have laid down the law and there's sweet fanny anyone (bar a select few, I suppose) can do about it.
As much as I resent rolling over and dying, what other option is there if those with the power don't give a fish's?

ROFLMAO!!! And thats coming from a person who's probably the least tolerant on these forums. Talk about double standards.
I really don't want to get into the whole believe system thing since its an argument which will probably never be solved. I'd just like to mention the definition of the word "tolerance": The capacity for or the practice of recognizing and respecting the beliefs or practices of others. The fact that you so eagerly dismiss the believe of others is in itself intolerance. The fact that you don't care whether you hurt or disrespect others with your insensitive speech, is in itself
intolerance.
On the flip side of the coin, I do tolerate your cursing, as I do tolerate people smoking in the office. I could go off on a tangent, throw my toys out the cot and scream like a little girl instead. But it won't help much now would it. Just like it won't help you going off about how cursing means nothing and that the rules should be changed to follow your own believes. I think most of us is merely saying to turn it down a bit and think before you call someone ugly names. It's really that simple. Isn't that a compromise already?

Besides, exactly which moral values dictate telling other people, who do not share your believes, how to behave? Now I just so happen to *know* that there are no religions which say that I can't swear. Perhaps *you* can't swear, but thats your own perogative.

LOL, personal vendetta, eish.
I'm going to put it very simple for you:
- You chase people away by cursing, whether you believe its wrong or not.
- You don't earn extra credits for cursing at others, instead you are showing a general incapability of proper conversation.
- Religion unfortunately for you is not dead yet. Until then you will keep disgusting others, that also don't earn you credits.
- Regarding the dictation: Dictatorship is slightly larger than a few simple rules on SGS, get over it.
- I do swear, yet I have some form of constraint, you don't seem to posess the same capability.
Is that simple enough or do you need some examples of constraint too?

I havn't yet said that there should be swearing on the servers. However all your arguments for why there shouldn't be swearing are totaly bogus, and all based on personal belief systems which do not cross religious boundries. To enforce a rule that is based on ONE religion, and even to a large extent one subset of that religion (not all christians are against swear words), on a public server, is wrong.
Perhaps you don't actualy understand the extent to which the SGS ROE defines "swearing". You should go and have a read before arguing with The_Basilisk.
Oh, and Terror, please don't make threats of physical violence. I think you'll find it's against the law (along with "public indecency"), in contrast to swearing which is protected by the constitution under my right to free speech.

Well this is an interisintg thread something close to heart
Let me put it this way for people who do not understand the whole rules thing
1. You drive to fast(even people to young to have license hopefully can relate) i.e faster than speed limit.
2. You get caught and fined ... the road wad empty etc etc so you think its unfair ... you still have to pay or else face greater fines and jail ... why ... you broke the rules.
The same applies to swearing on a server with a no swearing rule ... you break it and you must face the consequences.
There is not really a big debate about if swearing should be allowed or not.
If you dont like it you can object and try to get the rules changed etc etc ... if you can't well thats life.
One thing about the whole ooo ooo its my right to break rules ... here is a simple rule aout life
Life is not fair get over it
The sooner you realise it the sooner you will grow up.
