Heya,
There was talk of telkom bubmpingour ADSL lines up at the beggining of august.
I checked mine this morning and am still on 192, whereas I should be bumped up to 384.
Anyone know if it is still happening? Or if you have to actually phone in to get the upgrade?
thanks
Haja, if you think Telkom will upgrade you when the clock strikes 12 on 1 Aug, you are sorely overestimating the momentum of our lovely monopoly. It is definately still happening, but doubt it will happen today, or next week, or next month.
That reminds me, my 384K to 512K upgrade will only cost a few Rand more. Must phone em today. Yes, I am Telkom's bitch.
From www.thebestbroadband.co.za
DSL384 will become Telkom's entry level ADSL offering. Customers who are unable to connect (sync) at 384 Kbps due to factors such as line length or quality will be accommodated down from 384 Kbps in 32 kbps decrements, but not lower than 192 kbps, until the service connects (sync's successfully).

Hmmm, so should i phne them and ask them to transfer me, hoping that they wil not charge me more at the end of the month. or wait for them to do it automatically, possibly dying before it actually happens.....
Just spoke to them and they are upping my 384K to 512K. The upgrade is free of charge, except the few extra Rands at the end of the month on my bill for subs. Give them a call and ask them to upgrade your line to 384K. Since they are the same price now (192K and 384K), you have nothing to lose. 0800 375 375, Option 1, Option 1.
Haja I'm also on 192k. I reckon let's wait one week and see what happens. I'm also going to keep an eye on the myadsl forums and see if anyone's come up with a way to speed the process up.
Strangely enough since I've had dsl since Oct last year I was always on 384 speeds. The same week they announced this free 'upgrade' I was suddenly bouced down to 192k speeds...
EDIT: Let my try Gamos' idea first :P
done.
And I think I just spoke to the nicest Telkom person ever.. damn.. she knew everything, it was done in 10 seconds. I asked her if I don't do this, how long will it take? and the response was; it's pretty much well al list, and they go down through it. Could take a few days, could take a couple of weeks. The way I've just done it still costs nothing, and will be switched in 2/3 days.
Thanks Gamos, nice1
Yeah, also quite impressed. This is the signs of the times isn't it?

According to the gentleman I spoke to, they are upgrading our lines, cos 'Telkom loves its customers' LOL!
ps, thanks G :P

Well Gamos made a post with the following:

Telkom is not doing this to be nice... They know that it doesn't cost them one single cent extra to offer us either 192, or 1024, and they just making hay while the sun shines, and trying to look all "customer-centric" because they know how much all the ADSL subscribers hate them.

Okay, I phoned them on that number, and it was fairly painless except for the offering of some arbitrary fax product I don't need and the operator calling http, httm!?
He said I can't speed up the process and that all lines will be upgraded today or tomorrow. I guess it just depends on who you speak to ;)
Anyways, here's a cool little site that will calculate your current throughput for you if you dont know.
http://www.telkom.co.za/minisites/dsl/speed1.html
192K
Old price: R270
New Price: R245
384K
Old price: R359
New price: R245
512K
Old price: R477
New Price: R362
As you can see, 192K and 384K becomes the same thing now, and upgrading from 384K to 512K, will work you out R3 more than you paid with the old price.

Up Stream
192 (Kbps.)
Down Stream
320 (Kbps.)
Of course that hasn't happened yet....
I also upped to 1024, prices are getting more reasonable. Now if we could only get ISP prices back to what they were before myadsl screwed everything :(
I read somewhere, either on Telkom itself or one of the ISPs that Telkom aren't simply upgrading people automatically. You have to phone them and get them to do it - so if any of you are still sitting around and waiting for a week - DONT. Phone their lovely customer care line :)

its great that adsl prices are comming down but line rental is going up, if anybody didnt read that part of there whole price plan for the next year.
No idea where you get your info from Sting, but this directly from Telkom:
http://www.mybroadband.co.za/nephp/?m=show&id=3731
“Existing DSL 192 users will automatically be upgraded to the 384 DSL service during August 2006. Customers who are unable to connect (sync) at 384 kbps due to factors such as line length or quality will be accommodated down from 384 kbps in 32 kbps decrements, but not lower than 192 kbps, until the service connects (sync’s successfully),”
Just don't expect it to happen quick, this is Telkom after all.

www.openweb.co.za (http://www.openweb.co.za)
I get a a 2 gig int then 28 gig local for R173 i think it is.
It is on the IS network, but my pings on IS are pretty good and stable nowdays, moreso than SAIX (maybe cos I am in dbn and I have a screwed up hop thru SAIX)

Yeah but its openweb... don't do business with people from Balito.. just don't..
You sluts have just caused me to upgrade from
384 -> 512
By the way - there is no change in the actual line - its a software parameter.
You must dial 10219 and select dsl - ask for the upg there.
Will test it tonight when I am home.

Karn, openweb have always been super efficient for myself. I mean with their main guy being called Mr Beep, how can you not trust them :)
But seriously. they have always answered my questions timeously, and actually give a toss. They sent constant updates when SAIX were squeezing them at the Rosebank exchange. They really are a cool ISP, and have been using them for a long time (over 8 months) and have never ever had 1 problem with them.
Not plugging them, just want ppl to know that there is nothing wrong with them :)
By the way, has anyone else noticed that SAOL have stopped their more and more frequent connection drops as you approach your cap?
Well Shrimp
You have to phone them and ask to put you on a 24 hour refresh else its proportional to how much cap you have left and how frequent the disc's are. They dont get an inclination and do it on their own for you unfortunately.
Peon
I haven't phoned anyone, and I don't get disconnected all the time when I'm low on cap, which is what my comment is about.

Hey just noticed my dsl is running at 512. Seems they bump you up wthout asking and you just pay for the little extra. Looks like they don't want to lose cash with dropping prices. Seems they rather bump up (speed wise) and if you want to drop and save cash you need to call them.
Sweet 512K Hope it's better.
I am also on 512K now. Took a day.

my modem says upstream 384Kps :D
It's supposed to say 512Kbps for 384K... 25% of the bandwidth winds up as error channels and ATM overhead.
Yesterday I was 512/256 (that's 384kbps). I called Telkom at about 3pm, amazingly didn't have to wait at all for operator. Asked for upgrade, all done in less than a minute.
Checked this morning...640/384
The idea of an efficient Telkom troubles me.........
