Ok so went to that forum thing last night. And this is what i got.
Looks like "saix" or some similar company is looking to start a service where you pay for a online community. Like 75 bucks per month. U get to use a vpn so it does not affect your monthly cap only when gaming. You also get games super cheat and you register as a Cyber athlete which tracks your gaming stats and progress. You get some other free games(300) popcap like games to play aswell and some forums.
Sounds ok but i told them it's to expensive. 75 bucks ontop of adsl and and ISP cost is a little steep. But anyway.. got paid to listen and talk bout game stuff. WIN WIN scenario!!!
What you guys think?

hmm, well, personally, coming from a "weekend" gamers perspective (mine), I would not pay this. It is not so much the cost, more the actual content for my own personal use.
I only play one game, UT. So buying new, cheap games does not really feature for me. Using a VPN so as not to use my cap, although sounding good, does not stack up for myself. I only use 10-20 meg a night when I game, and I game 2-3 times a week max, so thats round about 200meg on average a month. My cap is 30 gig, so not too fased about 0.66% of my cap going towards gaming.
I think instead of thinking of news ways to make money by rehashing the same infratructure they have, they should look at improving what we allready have. Let us get 40 pings stable, instead of hoping for a 60-70ms ping on ADSL.
Thanks for the feedback pepper, good to know though :)

But for someone like me, on 192k 3gb cap it sounds great.
I 'borrowed' a bf2 key, which lasted for 2 weeks before I had to 'return' it. But in that time I used about all my bandwidth, its an extremely demanding game.
So although UT doesnt use much, other games do. And I can only see this getting worse with newer games demanding more..
R75 for unlimited gaming, and VPN pings, sounds like a good deal to me..

ye, I agree JKR. As I said, it does not suit myself, but more intense games and gamers, it would be very nice for.
You metion 'VPN pings' are they better than normal pings (unshaped or something to that effect?)
In my experience when using VPN's it's better yes.
Seeing as it's still using your DSL line I don't see why.. but that's just what I've found.
Perhaps it depends on how the VPN has been setup etc... maybe someone can give a more technical explanation..? :P

This sounds very amicable, though I think they would get a much better response from the publice if they came in around R 50.00 per month, for me that would be much more reasonable. The idea of tracking stats if like myself play quiet a variety of games would be great.
anyway my 2c

I really really like it :D
Bf2 takes around 70mg an hour so this would be a life saver for my 5 gig cap.
Thnx Pepper for the info and sorting this out. If you could post a link as to how to go about getting this service it would swell ;)

SAIX can jump in a fucking lake on principal. I'm not paying them for dick, I don't care how good it is.
Since when do VPN's bypass your cap?

Not sure the details of the cap idea. They where sketchy on the specifics. This idea is super new and we wheren't even allowed to take any printouts or anything. Tried sneaking the product plan out but they bust me. So this is still very high level. Will keep and eye open for any updates, specifics.
Interesting though.

It's not "super new", but you'll have to take my word for it.

Openweb have been offering a vpn for their gamers for a long time now.
Infact, after checking a while back for good ISP deals, alot of ppl offer VPN specifically for WOW and other games like that. I understand this is the "next level" offering a VPN, and not an ISP, but the idea has been done before. I think most of these VPN's went for about the same amount.
Since when do VPN's bypass your cap?
Thinking the same thing.
Well if that is the case why don't ISP's just make it a free service? Mostly all ISP's oversees do not charge for any bandwidth generated from their own servers be it gaming or downloads.

because *NO* ISP in SA asside from SAIX affords that luxury, their client lines do not terminate in their network, they have to pay to get their clients traffic to them, and those links are very expensive.

How the HELL does a VPN not use your CAP. There has to be a medium of communication. That's why it is VIRTUAL!
