I always enjoy learning the history behind other people's online gaming experiences, so here goes: How did you end up playing Unreal Tournament 2004 online?
My Story
I only got connected at the start of 2001 (:o), so my online history doesn't go back too far.
Back then I had a trusty 56K modem, so my options were kind of limited to begin with. Knowing that Valve's game engine had good modem performance, I settled on Counter-Strike as my game of choice. I played quite a bit over the next year, but never really developed any skills.
SAIX eventually put the Half-life Deathmatch server back, so inbetween my rounds of CS I trolled around on it looking for people to play against. Unfortunately there weren't many, so before long the server was gone again.
Sometime in 2002 I gave up on CS completely. I tried various other games (Battlefield 1942, Wolfenstein: ET, etc) but it was becoming quite clear that my modem wouldn't allow me to really enjoy them. Soon after that I left the online scene.
Fast forward to February 2004 and the UT2k4 demo. I dabbled with the UT2k3 demo a bit at the time it was released, but it didn't really catch my fancy. Heck, I was never much of a UT99 fan anyway. Having read about the new-fangled Onslaught though, I decided to give UT another spin. Those first few ONS matches were incredible! Even on a modem I could see that this was a most interesting gametype. As the number of matches climbed it became clearer and clearer that something had finally come around to grab my attention again.
I subsequently got ISDN and patiently awaited the full game's arrival. The day finally came but frustration quickly set in as I was unable to find a copy! I almost bought Battlefield: Vietnam out of desperation but luckily managed to snag a copy of the DVD version of UT2k4 in the end.
And here I am. Long live Onslaught!

I started playing lan with my buddies with hldm nd quake 3, was some fun times 2 people and 12 bots. :p played serious sam coop MANY times.
Then I got isdn and started playing the halo demo online (lag and all) was also alot of fun.. previously I had played ut2003 and I liked the "unreal theme" I didnt bother playing online because I didnt know there was local servers
After getting tired of halo and ut2003 bots I saw ut2004 was coming out and the image of the leviathan was quite something, so I went and got myself the DVD version when it came out and started playing on the international servers.
One day I decided to join a server with quite a low ping and I asked the guys who where playing where the server was, they said it was in JHB or something and I couldnt believe what I was reading, they told me about UZA and here I am.
:D
Back in the varsity days I played just about everything that was available. Only got hooked up with home PC end of 2003. Didn't bother much with games until I spotted UT2003 and I remember playing UT99. Bought it played it, then along come UT2004 demo, got that, started playing online and been hooked ever since.
Gave up on analog, went to ISDN for about a year and then last year switched to ADSL.

UT 99 was the 1st PC game i ever played..as i only started messing with PC's in 99....
I guess I continued playing it until 2003 then I got a 128k modem and started playing online...there were guys like Gandulf, Braindamage, Draclore, Kwankung and other monsters playing online as well...out came UTK04..had to wait a whole week! and I spent the best part of 2003 to date being owned.
These days I play CSS... it is less frantic and I am so much better at it.
I had ISDN for a few years but only to dial into work. I never really got around to getting internet access for it. I acquired ADSL in November last year. I had UT2004 since it came out (but I had never played it online as such - just a couple of LANs with friends - nothing hectic.)
After a few days it dawned on me that I could play online so I searched the web for Unreal - found this site and hobbled onto one of the local servers.
Man - I was just totally annihilated in the beginning! Fortunately the ONS ladder tryout thing started in Dec so I got to play many ONS matches and get some practice in.
I engage in duelling every once in a while but generally get decimated (i.e. I sometimes manage to get 1 point per their 10).
Having loads of fun though :)

UT huh wtf is that?
I thougt i was playing pacman?
Please don't troll and turn this thread into a flame. I would very much like to read everyone's story without having to wade through lots of insults first.
Well me, I got Unreal2, and saw UTXMP, the online version, I had ADSL at the time, then played 6 months online wiht 700 ping, believe it or not, owning the people there, then, I heard about UT2004, and was aching to get it, i could not wait one day, with ONS and all! And Then we got it, played a week offline, then i hopped online, and here i am
Been playing games forever but only started being competitive and playing against others with cs 1.1 at a local internet cafe..
Played that for a good year or so then was introduced to Quake3 by a very enthusiastic and pretty hardcore player called Tb0ne.. After that for a good 2 years Quake was my main game but eventually became so tired of the engine and my other friends were miles behind me so decided to give ut2k3 a try.. At first it was going to be just a stepping stone until the next quake/doom game but after playing it for so long, and then ut2k4's arrival, it's pretty much my 'main' competitive game atm..
But to be honest when Quake4 comes out, and if it's any good I'll probably convert back, unless UT4 is better...
How did I end up playing UT? Well a good friend of mine when ut2k3 first came out got hooked, and it was all he wanted to play and he sucked at quake so I just started playing it with him, I was impressed with the weapon's and pretty gfx (A nice breather from picmip) and although it was weird with no strafing I soon got the hang of it..
The End.

i basically started playing UT99 @ lans only, had a few online games but the ping (on 56k) put me off & i could never really get into the game.
along came Diablo II (i loved the original and spent countless hours on battle.net until the hax became unbearable) and i dropped ut99 like a hot piece of coal :P i still lan(ed) UT for a year or so, but diablo II got my attention for 3-4 years (i stopped playing d2 4 or so months after the 1.10 patch came out and i jus lost "plak" for the game, and alot of my local buddies online started moving on as well.
along came the ut2003 demo (which basically screwed my poor PC) and it didnt quite catch on (it just wasnt like ut99, which i stopped lanning by this time). i moved onto a range of other (most SP) games for 2003 as well as getting my cube (one of the best purchases i EVER made) which kept me all too bZ.
the rest i believe is more or less like everyone elses here: saw the ut2004 previews (VEHICLES OMW! WOW!) got the demo, absolutley loved it, bought the full game on its 1st day of release :P started playing the SP game for a week or so & soon i ventured online. google'd for some local servers and BLAM! instant hooked.

Whatever you said initially, don't worry about it. I was talking to Superman, actually (hence me quoting him). ;)

Who judges what is reckless posting- It was probably deleted because there was excessive swearing there- wich was to highlight how pissed off i was that YOU (flux) burnt my post. Now it was a joke- You obviously missed it , and now have made it into more than it is. You obiously have no sense of humour and didnt catch the sarcasm in it ( U only look to see the "bad" in me , and beacuse u blinded by your own hatred u miss the "jokes" i make). Point is , if u didnt open your silly trap and make a stupid comment, my post probably would have been quoted with a "LOL" reply post.
Now all of this is because of YOU.
Supermans original post: "huh whats UT- I thought i was playing pacman the whole time" ( that was the jest of it)
Now any "normal" person would have realised that it was a joke and not an attempt to "flame/destroy" the topic. FFS i was about to tell my story in full also.
U SUCK NUFF SAID.

If im the only one that though it was trolling, then why did xan ask you to stop aswell, now I apologized, so please leave this thread alone.

I started yay back with Unreal 1. Saw some adds for it before the release, got a tech demo of PC Format (NAG didn't exist then), I still have the tech demo, you need to enter a key for it to work. It ran like a charm on my Pentium MMX 200, 32mb ram (shared 4mb gfx card).
Got the official game and installed it....tried to play it and couldn't. Performance was too choppy. Bought a TNT1 later and still couldnt play it. I waited with baited breath for each patch that was suppose to improve performance... About a year later I got a PII 400 with 128mb ram and finally got to play, what I deem, a piece of art. (U2? wtf?)
Ever since then I have been on the Unreal bandwagon. Still remember the UT1 demo days, pics from planetunreal, and of course buying UT1 and Q3A for R299 each at IC at the same time! Before that I was kinda n00b and bought UT1 at a flea market, asked the guy if it was legit, which he said was, got home and found a PATCH dir. Was pissed, went back, spoke to his boss via cell and exchanged it for a legit copy of some other game I have forgotten the name of now. He wanted to make a case against me at the police for dragging his name thru the mud by calling his software piracy....bwhahahahahhahaaaaaaa shame.
One gametype that I particularly like about UT1 and UT2004 is assault. Was awesome to jump from that chopper onto that train in UT1. I am terrible with names, can't remember the map name now.
Hope we see many more Unreal games!

mmmm....i started with pc's in '97 and never looked back, i always had some game to play. my buddies and i used to swap out our games, so i borrowed ut99 played it for about two days and unistalled it did the same with ut2k3, then i got unreal2demo i still remeber playing the guys in uk sitting on the roof sniping so when the game came out i got me a copy.
then i got ut2k4demo off a pc mag cover disc and saw the online feature i found a server in sa, as ironic as it may sound the only 2 guys online there was nomie and nevar who shot me to bits, but for the fisrt time i got to play a game online and i liked it.
so when the game came out my wife spoiled me with a copy so i did the same internet search for some local servers where i met the guys from TA. Vortex invited me to a lan they had at daweed's place and now i'm hooked as camel gave me the url to this here fine peace of internet ficility.
so, here i am upgraded to dsl from my trusty old 56k
truth be told this game actually made me feel whole cause i met new ppl, had shit loads of fun, it even convinced me to get dsl
so finaly i have a place where i belong a golden retreat away from traffic and problems that live throws
viva le ut....ons for teh win

Thanks for cooling things down - I appreciate that. :)
Now let's hear some more stories! The ones so far have been very interesting.
By the way, Bio - I share your feelings of camaraderie. It's nice to go somewhere where people know you and good times are had.
I started playing on a pc back when my dad got me a copy of Commander Keen.lol
Pretty quick i got gatvol and left the pc alone until 1 day Mac told me he was playing u2xmp over the net ..
That got me started again and im still trying to figure out why the hell i get my ass kicked and come back for more

i started playing with the ut99 demo. the thing that hooked me was before that i was a duke3d player and only used a keyboard. the idea of a mouse in a FPS was wierd to me. So anyway i get the ut99 demo from a mate and we start to duel on morpheus, the keyboard only way is not working at all for me. so i tried the mouse, and what did i do kicked his ass with an amazing move (for me at the time it was, now it's normal)...and that is where it began.
I was with my brother at a computer faire and I saw a bunch of people playing Unreal 1, I was in ooooooo and aaaaaaah land when I saw that.
I then managed to get a pirate copy of the game (shame on me!) and I played that game for many months after. On my 4th time of playing the game, I finished it without totally losing my shield, if I got hit I'd load the game until I got past the baddie :P
UT99 came out and I got the game (Bought it!) and played it at lans and at home. Never thought about playing it online. My Cousin in portugal had a clan named "Zorg", I was bored the one time and I downloaded the replays and watched it. That got me hooked onto the online idea of the game. I went in search of www.unreal.co.za and found some links to get online and a CD Pack. I contacted Nom@n at the time and he cut me a copy of the mappacks + patches all required to play online.
On the weekend I installed the game, applied the patches and dialed up (56K) and thats how it all started. I cant remember my first match though, but it was a DM game. My first duel was against Max2 where I got WTFPWN'ed, my first win was against Ultr@violet on DM-Morphues. And thats about it, been in the Unreal scene ever since, and still on .56K (aka poor mans conn)

my first fps was quake3 a m8 got a pirated version and we played it, he did the moving on the keyboard i moved the mouse. So eventually I learned to use it together, but my s3 savage4 video card had some weird driver on it, I couldnt see the quake menu nor did I have a crosshair, I didnt even know crosshairs existed, so I played quake for years against the bots without crosshair and without a menu, I had a piece of paper to write down how often to move the arrow key in which direction to get to which map etc rofl...
Then a m8 invited me to a lan to play cs and we got hooked, there i also saw the first unreal but it didnt interest me at all. Tried cs on 56k and couldnt even connect so i left it. Then I got isdn and played happily with my m8īs cd key (cos he didnt play online) till steam came out, the day it came out i quit cs. Spotted ut2003 in capeads for 140 bucks and thought I bought an original, I liked it alot but couldnt play online, it was possible to play a while if you entered the server by connecting via the console but u got kicked pretty soon.
Few months later I phoned a pc store to ask them what a good online game was and they wanted to sell me quake3 for 300 bucks!!! Then they said ut2004 was out soon so I got the demo and was hooked. (bought the game:D)

I Started playing Startcraft online back in '98 on my 28k modem. then in 2000 i moved over to CamperSuck and played that for a few years (up to 2004). Then after losing out on R5000 because of some lucky headshot from a player that couldnt aim for crap, I decided that CS is too random and uncontrolled.
I then proceeded to download and play the UT2004 demo, which i really enjoyed (ONS kicks ass :P ). I bought myself a copy, headed onto the SGS servers and had some fun.
Then I joined Helix, which is obviously the clan of choice for UT proffessionals like myself :P
