Yo
I recently did a full system upgrade and I wanted to know if my benchmarks are more or less on par. This is what I've got :
- FOXCONN NF4XK8MC-RS SOCKET-939 MICRO ATX MOTHERBOARD
- BOXED AMD ATHLON 64 3000+ CPU – SOCKET 939
- 1 GB DDR-400MHZ DIMM – HYNIX
- XFX GEFORCE 7600GT 256MB DDR-3, 128-BIT PCI EXPRESS 16X CARD
- 160GB SEAGATE BARACUDDA SATA HARD DRIVE
On 3DMark 05 I get about 5,500, on 3DMark01 I got 15,000 and my Aquamark score is 54,000. I've heard through a friend through a friend through HIS friend, that my other friend is benching 16,000 ( I assume on 3DMark01 ), but he's got an identical processor to mine, a SLI mobo ( looks quite impressive ) and a 6600GT.
It seems peculiar that he would nail such a high score, since the 7600GT is supposed to wax the floor with the 6600GT, or is it possible that a motherboard's quality could be responsible for the 1,000 point difference?
Dude dont bother comparing 3Dmark 2001 scores, its more processor dependant. Regards to Motherboard performance, its more of a chipset comparison than motherboard comparison when u talking performance (Nforce3 vs NForce4 vs Xpress3200 etc). However, different Motherboards using the SAME chipset rarely have a greater than 1% stock performance difference between them.
That sounds about right hey.
I get about 6600 on 3dMark2005 and 62000 on Aquamark with the following:
P4 LGA775 3.2Ghz (AKA Stoveplate)
1.5 Gb DDR400 RAM
6600GT (128mb)
I was looking at the 7600GT as an upgrade, but there doesn't appear to be a big difference on the whole.
The 7600GT did do quite well against a 6600GT in Age of Empires. 3 times faster in fact!
But in most other games, the 7600GT was only 5 -12% faster.

It's weird, like on most benches the 7600GT either trounces or just beats the 6600GT noticeably. Truth be told, I'm not too bothered about benches, I'm just grateful I don't have to come home to an Athlon XP 2000+ anymore :P
I just found it strange that he got more than me, with the only tangible advantage he has being his board. Sam, could the fact that he paid well over R1,000 for his board compared to my +- R500 - R600 be attributed to the ( miniscule ) performance gap? I've got an nForce4 board, whereas I'm not sure 100% what he has, but he sure as hell's got something :D

A .2Ghz difference in processor and 512MB of memory (with an "inferior" display card) = 1,100 more points in 3DMark05? *scratches head*
Snake,
Best advice is to get some UT, FEAR and other game benchmarks. These synthetic 3d test are influenced way too much by drivers.

My FEAR benches at about 33FPS with everything maxed, which seems pretty good, since I got 36FPS on the automatic, optimal settings :P
Ja, gaming benches DO tend to be more reliable, since they are, well, real-world applications.
EDIT : FEAR actually went up to 44 yesterday. Divine Intervention, I guess :D
Compare that with your friend to check it out.

Found the problem. Anyone with an nVidia card knows that the drivers allow for customisablility for various applications ie games, benching tool etc. I saw all the 3D Marks in there, so I assumed that if their individual settings were set correctly, the global settings wouldn't override them (my global being set to 4xAA and 8xAF). Needless to say, the globlal settings overrode them and once turned off, I got 17,000 in 2001 (which was expected) and FEAR actually went up to 75-80FPS with maximum details... but only when AA and AF were disabled :D
Why buy a card like that and then turn them off?

It was for just-so-I-know value. Like I said in my earlier posting, my global settings have them both on, so it was just to reference my benches that I took them off. I wouldn't dream of paying Rxxxx.xx to run games without stuff like that on. I've had a GeForce FX card for TOO long! FEAR runs at about 40+ FPS with AA & AF, which is good enough for me, since my eyes are only those of a human being :P
