Yo guys, just wanna say, stay away from espressos or any strong coffee, me and a mate were drinking like a 500ml of espresso each at a meeting(im not really a coffee drinker), while my mate is, and i had to be rushed to hospital, coz u wont believe it, I OD'd on caffeine (yeah wtf?), I just got outta da hospital, im doing fine, except im majorly numb, and my head is the size of a 19"Tyre, Just thought i'd share this with u, in case u wondered, It is fatal to OD on caffeine. So you have been warned.
Symptoms I had.
- Left arm was feeling numb and pins and needles
- Heart pumped outta my chest
- blood preasure was majorly high
- Kept wanting to faint
- I couldnt speak propperly, struggeled a lot.
- Even tho it was fcking cold, my body temperature was high.
- Light headed and felt totally lost.
and ya....that was my last cuppa coffee eva, see this as a warning, and no flames plz.

You 100% sure the numb left arm and wanting to faint thing had nothing to do with a skommel or something you had earlier?

I quit coffee as well after I partied hard the night before and tried to revive myself for a test on coffee alone, and then overdid it a bit...

Drinking 500ml of espresso was not the best of ideas considering its concentration of caffeine. It's a lot like beer, you build a tolerance over time.
Needless to say that I need at least 5 cups a day !!:bounce:

Eish Gozz, that sounds...weird. I am sure it was a combination of things that caused it, but maybe us addicts do build up some resistance. Glad to hear you are allright.
This could very well explain this permanent left arm tingle. :p
If they allowed it I would have a drip in my arm pumping in caffeine.
Glad your ok and soz for laughing but that has to be the first time in my life that I heard of sombody ODing on coffee.

some people are just not tolerant... like me, i get high on one espresso, if i had 500ml of the stuff, i would probably land up in hospital too :)

As for me, I limit myself to one cup of regular coffee in the morning - otherwise I tend to get "shaky".
PS. Anybody ever tried to drink Bioplus before a major exam / test? Bad idea... I was floating on caffeine vapors and I think I may have had an out-of-body experience...

Ok... glad to hear you're ok... although having a 500ml espresso is probably not advised I'd like to just make you aware of the fact that properly made espresso has less caffeine in in than a normal cup of coffee.... If you have pins and needles in your left arm I suggest you go see a doctor as a numb left arm is almost a sure sign of heart problems, no doubt you okes pulled a all nighter or some shit and as a result the coffee probably just aggrivated what might be a potential problem in the first place....
BTW for any of you trying for a baby 3 cups of JAVA a day makes your little swimmers go much faster...... but only 3 cups.... too much caffeine and the actually go too slow.
Glad to hear you're ok Gozzy but go have a good check up done on your pump.....

hence my mild "this smells like bullshit" comment. Sound's more like he got properly stoned on the big greens than overdosed on caffine (which according to almost every source I can find, is absolutly impossible unless done with caffine tablets [stuff to keep you awake])

Which means that our poor Gozzy could actually have a more serious problem than a caffeine OD.
Those symptoms sound more like you were having a mild heart attack bro! It was probably just brought on by the cofee... so you should probably go for a heart check up too. Just to make sure.

ye, they gonna know, straight after they put a camera up ur ass. last time i went to hospital, after 5 days they still couldnt fix the problem or tell me what was causing it, rather they just put me on a drip and let me vegetate for 5 days.
1 hour after getting out and being totaly fed up with them, my accupuncturist fixed me and had a good chuckle at the "doctors" in the hospital being so damn ignorant. if they cant fix it with antibiotics, ure screwed.

Erm, people often misinterperate the information given to them by the doctor. Also it could have just been a fleeting remark, and not the *actual* prognosis. I've learnt a long time ago to take peoples interpretation of their doctor/hospital visits with a pinch of salt.
Why else did he ask for "no flames"?

Yo guys, thanks for the replies, im just the messenger as the doctor said i had an overdosage of caffeine in my system, and Id rather believe her than anyone, she even brought me a book about caffeine, and different strokes for different folks, i know of ppl that get drunk on 1/2 beer, and i know of ppl who dont get drunk on 2 bottles of captain morgan, as i said different strokes for different folks, the doctor had me on a heart machine, checked my blood preasure, gave me an EKG test, test my kidneys, i passed all these tests afterwards. But one thing i can guarentee u, i wont try that again.
I know of a person who OD'd on 1 Ecstacy tab and she died,and i know of ppl that had 4-5 ecstacy tabs from the same batch, and they survived.
Other than that, im as fit as a horse.

sorry to burst ur bubble. an uncle of mine had an OD on red-bull. he drank 5 in a row and his heart stopped or sumthing stupid like that. Was in hospital for a couple of days.

Welcome back.
Caffeine is the wonder drug of our time, but let me clear up a few myths, and possibly any stigma.
The minimum reported fatal dosage of caffeine ever was a dosage of 3 200 milligrams. That equates to 3.2 grams of pure caffeine.
Now, the most anything any human on the face of the planet could ingest at any one time would be 200 milligrams, in the form of one strong caffeine pill. Incidentally, the largest I've seen available in South Africa is a 100mg caffeine pill. As for your average cup of coffee, you're looking at 200 mg tops.
So, by virtue of these statistics, you would need to ingest at least 16 highly potent caffeine pills, or 16 large cups of filter coffee (instant has a lower amount of caffeine).
Now, if you're drinking 16 cups of coffee a day, you've either got a serious problem, or you've slowly gotten your body accustomed to it. In the case of the latter, 3.2 grams of caffeine wouldn't be adverse, although you'd probably suffer some heartburn.
For a really serious overdose, you're looking at around 10 000grams of caffeine. And trust me when I say if you get up to 8 000 milligrams, you'll want to commit suicide. There's a reported case of that.
As for espresso, you're looking at roughly 200 milligrams of caffeine per 147 ml of espresso. So call it roughly 650 milligrams of caffeine for a 500 ml espresso. Drink enough of those, and you won't be a happy camper.
It all comes down to your tolerance really.

To give you an idea, there was a stage where I consumed an average of three grams of caffeine a day.
Believe what you want to believe. For the record, the only thing it ever did to me was give me occasional heartburn when I didn't eat.
