Hi guys,

Another n00b question from me (couldn't find an answer elsewhere on the forum with the "search" function), but what would you recommend for my netspeed settings when going through 56Kbps dial-up? 4000?

It is currently set to 10000 (which I think is default), but I'm going to be without ADSL for a short while...

Thanks!

Try closer to between 2400 to 2700. If you have a decent connection, try bumping it up to 3000.

Hey man,

What shrimp said is right, 2500 - 3000 i had a ping of 132 - 138 so just go on that.

I mainly ran at 2500

Cheers

i used 2600, back when i was still young and sexy. i also used to connect @ 44Kbps, when i got 48Kbps i pushed it up to 2800 and i got round about the same ping as nevets...

erm I just like to know how one can possible play with a 56 line? I am looking at 200 ping plus to all SA servers ...

would changing that setting affect it in any way? (I'll prolly try it tonight)

and what if I would host a server - could you guys with the broadband hit my server ok? (gonna put it up at around 20:00 tonight if any one would like to test - can't remember the IP off hand - but put cyghost in your buddy list)

I am *tired* of shootin bots - I crave uman company

It's quite playable on 56k, it just requires a bit more practice. As for hosting a server, not a chance in hell it'll be even slightly playable for anyone ;) :P.

*sigh* takes my LG like two sconds to fire - there goes my hitscan for what it was worth anyways - plus it will surely screw with my uber micro over all

I thought so *sigh even deeper*

I tried playing online at 56k last night... 't wasn't really successful. Perhaps the problem is that my first few online games were on ADSL, so it was a huge dissappointment. In the "instagib" game I really lost it - can't aim or anything.

Ag ja....

ye, i remeber my modem days. Its where i learnt to use the rocket launcher and other spam weapons :)

Unless your a seasoned pro, like zyron, stayt away from hitscan weapons (sniper, asmd primary)

56K is both asymetrical and single duplex. So you've only got 33.6K upload to everyone else if you want to host a server.... As Shrimp said, no chance in hell.

beg to differ

played a game last night at 200 ping - its just bad ... very bad

upload at 33 k have to be better than my trying to play a game at that ping

I am h8ing telkom more and more

coming from a 7mb/s dl at my house in Korea to this mess is a HUGE dissapointment

ok - I'll get that broadband thing going

now just this - what is better? ISDN or ADSL?

Depending on what u will to pay ISDN is better though

dsl192 (or higher) might be better than isdn since u r already used to dsl from your previous connection. it really sux going back to dialing up. and its only slightly more xpensive than isdn.

if your UT skills are anything like your brother's oversee (code apparently?) you should be able to own with 56k in no time!:D

no m8 - code is in a class of his own - willing to wager no one in SA can touch him

will have to wait for that battle for some time though

and no - I find that if I play someone with some skills, the ping is simply too bad (they might very well beat me even if I did play on a super dsl as well, but at least I would see it coming )

sooooo I'll look into the broadband thing as soon as possible - in the meantime I might just be online nways cause I am a self confrimed UT addict and now it turns out a sucker for pain as well

:p

Ive been playing on .56K for over 8 years now. I can use hitscan weapons fairly well. Ask [N]Sam ;)

I hear you m8 :p I guess it is an individual thing - I *do* manage to hit with my hitscan (netcode ut is pretty good)

its just the whole play experince sucks big time

maybe we can have a game one of these days

ISDN isn't even a consideration any longer, imo. I moved from ISDN to 192k ADSL a few months ago. For me, ADSL works out few hundred Rand a month cheaper. That might not be the case for you, depending on usage. But the prices are very close anyway.

Plus of course, ADSL pings are in the 30-50ms range, ISDN is 60-80, or even 120 sometimes. A 70+ ping decreases the fun factor of online UT by quite a bit. But I don't need to tell you that I guess. :)

he he nope I experince it first hand

so ADSL would be my choice then ... thx for that

Your ping will depend on a few factors as far as i know....
1/.Modem type
2/.ISP
3/.Distance from game server(amount of hops)

ADSL... for sure.
