Breaking the 5 map shuffle. What about these? [Archive]

So we're all complaining about playing the same maps over and over. While it doesn't bother me yet, I'm just wondering why some of the less played maps don't get voted more often.

I'd like to promote some maps I enjoy quite a lot, invite comment on why they're unpopular (they may well truly suck for some reason not clear to me) and perhaps others can do the same. I'm talking about maps available for voting right now, while we wait for the UT powers-that-be to load some new ones.

My two candidates:
1. DM-Corrugation
2. DM-Metallurgy

The times we played them, they both played great imo.

And on the mod server:
3. DM-Achilles. We played this one to death when Arena was in fashion, maybe people are tired of it now, but I still think it's a great map.

Let's all agree that, at least for one month, we will at least try to vote for different maps, and will not vote for a map just because it pops up and we're to lazy to scroll down and look for a different one.

Honestly - I like all maps - the only map I don't enjoy is Takaraforest. Its too big - and the antigravity thing really is difficult to play with. I don't mind it in morpheous - because the map is relatively smaller and has areas where the antigravity doesn't apply.

very often I vote "the maps" I can't remember playing. and its fun - because if those maps win in votes - I find I get raped less and have a proper chance to find a weapons and do some damage.

I found Tokara forest quite nice, better than Morpheus for me. Can't stupidly throw yourself off into the pit of eternity, for one thing. :)

With all the CBP's I downloaded last week, I haven't had time to check out all the new maps I got - there are just too many!

But the following ones stood out for me so far:
- BlackJackal (from CBP1)
- Koma (from CBP2) - this one's totally psychedelic, lots of green lights and small walkways.

Corrugation is actually very nice. It is just learning where those corridors lead and where the lifts go, but it flows very nicely with good weapon and armour placement.

Metallurgy is a bit too open for my tastes, and the multi layerd aspect makes those cheap snipes from miles away all too common. Still, it has a nice flow to it, but you need a lot of players for that map.

I started voting for every map (starting from the bottom) last night. We got to T, so continue that to check out some other potential gems that never gets played. :)

imo, the mod server shouldn't have the standard maps in it's map list, it's a mod server...

how about maplist mods once a week for the main server?
eg. once a week we remove the top 5 maps from the maplist and only add them again after a week...

The CBP2 maps are just too arty and really not focused on any sort of gameplay. I enjoy the crummy square boxes that one can just run around and kill eachother in without tripping on vines or getting jammed on a 5000 polygon cog.

I fully agree. I love the 5 map circuit. It suits me just fine that these 5 maps are like HIV in Africa.

this is what i noticed last night. like the only night of the month we on the mod server and we play the same old crap!!! and when we go change to a odd map half the peeps disaper and i get a 400+ ping :( .
y is we get stuck with them really boaring 5 map???

Please realise that UT is as much a hobby as it is a sport as it is a meassuring tool for your e-penis. Please do not entertain thoughs like "new maps" that could cause e-impotence.

I was watching the servers last night, and dispite all of this moaning and stuff, any time you look at the server list there's at least one Rankin, one Campgrounds, and one GrendleKeep match on. If any map other than those does happen to come up, the player count drops to a third and the server will be empty shortly after. How about rather than whining, we actually play something different. There are already over 150 maps on each server to choose from.

Yeah exactly, that's what this thread is about. So while on the MOD server, did not one person even try voting for Achilles? Oi...

I regularly sneak in a vote for Corrugation on the main server. Sometimes it just takes one person to make the first vote. OK sure, some peeps moan and whine when that happens. Hey, this is UT!

PS - oh yeah, I was there too, haha. But fiddling with my mouse settings between games. That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it OK? :)

There is the slight problem that upsets that grand theory. It is the suck-unequilibrium. For ever Rankin, there are 5 Icetombs. For every Campgrounds, there are 5 Infernos. It goes on like that...

Playing the bad maps once in a while makes you enjoy the better ones more.

(If you just eat Ice Cream all the time you get sick of it. You have to have brussel sprouts once in a while. Ok - wait - maybe not brussel sprouts but you get the idea... :) )
