Hey guys, I was wondering what is the lowest possible spec I can use to run a dedicated server for UT2k4.

The reason is because I am hosting a small LAN for a couple of noobs with the intention getting them into the game and hopefully have them joining us online by the time UT2k7 is out. Or maybe sooner if I can get them interested enough.

Most of them aren't keen to bring their own machines, and so I am obviously using everything I've got to help it go off smooth so each player can have a nice machine.

So, back to my question. Will a PIII-500 with 256MB RAM work alright simply as a server. I also hae a PIII-1000 laptop that I'm thinking of using? Any opinions, experience, tips?

First question : Why have a dedicated server when you can host UT lan games off your desktop box : Just click "listen" instead of dedicated server.

Any other questions ?

I have had it said on some authority that a "listen" server always have more latancy than a "dedicated" server

if you have the machine for it, simply run a dedicatd server on your machine. Then restart UT and join your own game under the LAN tab - I do it all the time and works swell

Well latency on a lan if no people are copying should be almost non existent.

LOL :)

Thanx guys. Looks like I'll have to host non-dedicated, like how cyghost said.

Oops! :D
Stupid me.

But I made a better plan anyways... I am going to unplug my media center for the weekend and then just hope no one notices when it's gone.

Jaymac - if you guys are a few - maybe 5 players - the PIII-500mhz 256M may juust do - i don't see why it wouldn't handle it - give it a try and if you battle - launch it off your desktop. do you have the server version of ut - if not come get it from me
