View Full Version : Games on the servers?
Predator

Hi,
I'm new, I'm not sure if this is the right forum for my question.
What times are generally favorable to find ut2004 games with other *humans* on the servers listed? I've tried a couple of times - added the servers to my "favorites" in UT - but I only manage to fight against server bots.
Please let me know - I've got ADSL so connection seems to be fine, now I just need somebody to play!
Thanks!
During the week from 6 onwards you will find "Humanoids" on the servers.
Predator, if you log onto the SGS main server, you are sure to find somebody to play against within a few minutes if you just hang around. Most players wait for somebody else to be on first. I know, vicious circle eh?

Thanks, I found some people online today - after 5 it seems "humanoids" roam the servers ;-)
For SGS, it seems I don't have all the maps although I got the Megapack with patch 3369, so it seems I have to do some downloading.
Thanks again, it was fun.
Well dude, if you'd voted Rankin instead of wasting your vote on Albatros or whatever it was, you wouldn't have had to get Campgrounds... *Think* next time.
I think Campgrounds is actually quite a fun map :D
Its worth downloading anyway ;)

you don't need lots of maps any way...
you just need Rankin, Grendelkeep, ironic, Compressed, Roughinery and campgrounds .... we seem to suffer from broken record syndrome...

I'm sorry about that, yesterday was my first game online ever, so the whole map voting with that woman's voice screaming "30 seconds left" got me a little anxious...
I just want to confirm that I'm downloading the correct map packs:
Currently, I've got the following 2 files queued:
- ClassicPack.zip
- ut2004-ecebonuspack.exe
As I've mentioned, I already got the UT2004MegaPack.exe (from gamespot) - which included the latest patch (3369) - I assume the 2 files I'm downloading now have some additional maps?
Thanks!
(I'll be *roaming* on SGS again later this week - see ya!)
u need the cbp packs, if u want to play on the mod server (recomended), and the classic map packs too.

Hi again,
It seems that the CBP download link for saix is down - seems their server has been hacked and some content got lost.
However, I found the following link where the 2 volumes of CBP2 kan be found:
http://www.planetunreal.com/cbp/
They also have CBP1 available. Just thought I'd share the link in case anyone else is following this "newbie" thread :)
Cheers

Yeah don't worry too much when that happens. Most of these reprobates were locked up in a room with a lightning gun and a plate of porridge when they were 3, and only let out once they hit 16. The level of skill can be a little discouraging, in other words.
You can always come frag me to make yourself feel better. Hell, everyone else does. :D

We don't actually play on the Mweb servers, so don't bother burdening your UT2004.ini file with the links to them.
For starters, leave CBP1 on the backburner as well. If a CBP map comes up (which only happens once a month or so on the MOD server) in 99 out of a 100 cases it is a CBP2 map. Download CBP2 first.
Let me know if you have trouble and I'll see what I can do.

Hi BMU!
I've been practising offline against bots set on "Adept" and sometimes "Masterful" skill level - but they don't get close to some of the players I saw online last night. I don't know how many times I got shot in the head by lightning guns - even though I'm jumping around like a rabid frog in heat.
I'm thinking of changing my nic from "Predator" to "Cannon Fodder" :)
A few times I also died because of a little lag - not sure if it's my connection or the server.
But yeah, I'll be back, hopefully I'll see you online sometime.
Cheers.

Hi Cataphract,
My CBP2 download is more or less halfway, thanks! (It's two volumes.)
I also downloaded the 1 on 1 pack and the ClassicPack this morning - hopefully my content will be more or less complete next time I go online.
I'll be adding all the SGS servers to my "favorites" list in UT, thanks!
Cheers,
Predator - I find bots a great training tool. The good guys will say you can't learn anything from playing bots, but they're lying. They just forgot what it's like when you start out.
Also, being repeatedly raped by machines seems somehow less personally deflating :)
Quick online skill guide, from my experience:
The average online skill level is between inhuman and godlike, no kidding. And quite a few guys are above "godlike." I started out like you, practicing (and mostly losing) against adept level bots. Now I can just about, sort of, hold my own against "inhuman" bots. At this level, online becomes more fun - I usually still have the lowest score, but I get enough frags to feel not totally abused.
Just hang in there, we need fresh victims! :)

Bots will always help you to get to a certain skill level, they should never be ruled out. Once you can beat a godlike bot, you should then know that you can own two players on the servers without having to blink: {TA}.Divexo(); and ]H[Cataphract.
Once you get the hang of online. You will really come to enjoy the game, maybe even join a clan and play some clannies.
See you on the servers!
P.S. If you need any help, don't hesistate to pull us aside on the servers.

Ask one of the better guys to help you out one night dude. If i am online, i would be more than glad to share some tips with you, but there are ALOT of people who could lend you better tips. Try and pull someone like Naut, Mudda, Sam, Gamos, Peterpan, or one of the good duellers aside. One night of tips would help immensely and let you start building your skill in the right direction from day one, instead of unlearning your bad habits at a later stage.
Also, pop onto the duel servers and spectate the duels, record them, and watch the overseas demo's of duels or TDM. This is invaluable, as you learn things that you never even knew you could do sometimes :P
for eg : even though I'm jumping around like a rabid frog in heat.
When a player jumps and double jumps excessively, it makes him easier to hit with a scan weapon like a LG or ASMD. Ratther learn to "vibrate" using the direction keys, and dodge, so your hang time is less in the air. Once you jump, you trajectory and air time is easily picked up by a good player, who will either shoot you in mid air, or lay 3 rockets at your feet when u land.
Anyhoo, GL, and play with the same nick you are on here with, so we can try and help u ingame. If you smurf until u get better, no one will know who you are and just continue raping you :)

Yes, I'll continue using "Predator", since I chose the "Mekkor" skin - and he looks a lot like the Predator in the movies :) The name doesn't really pertain to my FPS skills at this point - maybe in future, who knows?

Hiya Predator and Crazychic and welcome to UZA. :D
Don't worry if you don't do well on the servers, it's all Hax. It's easy to spot them ... just check the scoreboard after a game, all the people with a score higher then mine are fucking hacking!! That's all I have to say about that!:P
Otherwize it's good to practice against bots to get your gameplay super smooth and relaxed and to know your maps off by heart (I still don't) and to learn to time the shields. Also if you want to catch some tips or get to know folks be sure to hang around the duel servers, even if you don't play, don't be afraid to ask questions and be sure to watch closely when the big boys play, they're all a nice bunch of okes and I'm sure you'll enjoy your stay. :)

Welcome Pred and CrazyChic... It's so nice to see new players on the servers.
Read the helps and tips in these forums. Seriously, there is a LOT of good advice in them all.
GL and HF!
Bots are good for certain types of training.
It will help u when you come online to get some frags.
Online Experience will take you to the nxt level.
Also try get some demos of the wcg/ eswc / any good duel (if l available), these are excellent training tools.
When you get to a certain level - u may be invited to try out for a clan. Thats when the game becomes really enjoyable - good mates/ good beer/ and plenty of fraggin.

Right, so I believe my downloads are more or less complete. Since yesterday, I've downloaded and installed the following map packs:
- 1on1pack.zip (42Mb)
- cbp1.zip (140Mb)
- cbp2-volume1.zip (198Mb)
- cbp2-volume2.zip (195Mb)
- ClassicPack.zip (160Mb)
- dm-campgrounds2004-g1e.zip (1.7Mb)
- Already have the ut2004MegaPack.exe (205Mb) installed - incl. patch 3369.
I've installed everything and all the maps seems to be working, also got a couple of new character models with the CBP2 pack. I haven't had time to check out ALL the new maps, but so far only DM-[SvL]-PhobosClassic.ut2 (which came with the ClassicPack) resulted in a wonderful General Protection Fault... is this a known problem or was it just my lucky day?
So, am I good to go online to provide you guys with some target practice? :)
If I need any other map packs, plz let me know...
