View Full Version : Keyboard recommendations
What keyboards do you all use? I'm looking for one that can handle a million simultaneous keypresses anywhere on the keyboard (OK, actually about 4 simultaneous keypresses will suffice :) ).
On my current model, if I strafe diagonally, I can't select the minigun, just as an example. I can select other weapons, but not the mini, the way I have it mapped (the details of which is not that important right now.) This leads to death quite often and is very irritating. It's an el-cheapo R70 generic model, but from the in-store testing I've been able to do, it doesn't seem like the expensive Logitech/MS's are necessarily any better.
Thanks in advance
PS:
In case someone asks anyway, let me just give my key config. It's a WASD-type setup shifted right to YGHJ, because I play left.
Directions: YGHJ
Jump: spacebar
Weapons to the right of the direction keys for pinky switching: I,K,<,O,L -> Shock, mini, link, sniper, RL
Various other keys surrounding the YGHJ for other weapons, translocator etc.
Best weapon/flak: mouse thumb button

/me hugs his black logitech
BMU, did you try shifting those keys to WASD again? I am just wondering if it is a keyboard limitation, or a specific key thing.
My noname seems fine.
Noman: which Logitech dude.
Gamos: WASD is too far over to the left, my blood circulation will be cut off in my right arm and then they'll have to amputate and that might influence my game...but then again, probably not by much. :)
But seriously, different keyboards seem to have different quirks, i.t.o. what keypress combinations they can recognise. Even the expensive ones, or so it seems to me.

can't u just play right handed :P
I will plug in those combos later dude, and see if my Logitech handles them, then if they do, will let you know the model no etc

Good question, unfortunately by some unique twist of stupidity I learnt to use the mouse left-handed, even though I am really right-handed with most other things. :P But what difference will it make anyway, I bet there are key combinations around WASD that also don't work?
Please try this:
In Notepad, hold in Y + J, then press K. No need to fire up UT. If notepad registers the K, then it'll work in-game too.
PS - bugger me, everything works around WASD. It's another damnwell "right"-wing conspiracy. :)
The Logitech Internet Navigator is quite nice. Nice keys that feel nice and soft and fluffy to press.
Never used a better keyboard.
Besides the Y+J+K thing, I really love the R70 special I have now - it has really "flat" keys, i.o.w. they're low profile, makes that tricky double-tap easier to do than with the standard type of key that's higher and has more "travel" before it registers the keypress.
Hahaha,
analyze these notepad strings to find your answer:
jyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyjy
jyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyjy
jyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyjy
wdddddddddddddddddddddddf
wddddddddddddddddddddddddddf
wddddddddddddddddddddddddf
Hehehe, Mecer default keyboard.
Remember when Gamos asked if you tried to move the keys and you said SURE? :P

yes some very strange creations there.

Interesting. None too useful for gaming though.
Gamos: yeah yeah laugh it up, I know. Around WASD, everything works. If I move one key right or left from my current YGHJ setup, there are new, different combinations that don't work. Can you believe it.
Use the keypad brother. :)

Far as I know it has nothing to do with wasd etc. All keybords I have worked (Logitech, MS, HP, IBM, etc) on have a problem when doing combo's with your 2 middle rows of keys i.e. t,y,g,h,v,b and keys on they'r outer sides. It is ussually one of these + the key right next to one of these, and either one of the two further away that will cause this.
This also happens to your far right when you use for instance the L;'. So it would not even help moving your keys to the far right. Best is to play around with combinations on that side until you find a setup where you would not go for those keys simultaniously.
I havent seen many of the standard keybords that does not have that problem. You can always look at getting this keybord of you have loadz of money.... http://www.engadget.com/entry/1234000967040661/ other than that, I'm not sure if the new logitech g15 (http://www.engadget.com/entry/1234000043054056/) will have this resolved, but I doubt it.

Aaah thanx revenge. Very useful info! I doubt the G15 (at $80) would fair any better.
Yes Noman, we get it! Avatars are sponsored by Logitech. :P

yep!
Very useful Revenge, thanks.
Messing around with it, it seems IJKL does what I want, at least on my work keyboard.
Edit: oh man, that Ergodex $150 thing looks soooo cool. I want one!
I can't type on anything that doesn't have the MS natural keyboard split in the middle. :)
Couldn't you use ASDF and then just drag your keyboard way over to the "right-wing"?
Since your mouse is on left it should allow a comfortable feel (unless the keyboard falls off the desk or something?)
Yeah could do that, but I'm used to YGHJ now, with various non-essential keys (like "say" etc) to the left. I'm sure the IJKL setup will work though, at least I hope so.
MS Natural? Seriaaas? Sheez I hate those things. The one I had, just had such horrible keys, very hard to type on. They got "stuck", kinda. Or it felt like it. The split itself didn't bother me that much but I'd hate to try and game on one of those.
Cr@p Nom@n, is that thing for real?!?!?!
Logitech just makes the best stuff!

I use a generic black keyboard. It has a scroll wheel, media player buttons and nice springy keys. It cost me R100 and it works very well.
I saw this keyboard on the net which had a very cool keyset but I don't remember what it was called...

Wow, the datahand looks mean!
if you got long toes, you could use your feet :D
I personally use the Logitech Ultra-X OEM keyboard. It's available from Pinnacle Micro. It's a newish type of low-profile keyboard to eliminate that RSI possibility. It also features notebook style keys. Me likes.
Check it out here: http://www.joystiq.com/entry/1234000057040093/

I have also moved away from wireless keyboards and mice > mouse, battery always running flat, keyboard > lags and unresponsive at LAN's.

yo Razer, nice keyboard, how much??

Found one here....maybe get it cheaper somewhere else.
Maybe I should look into one, this POS of mine needs a hydraulic press to get the keys down, I figure those notebook keys should be alot quicker.
